10 Awesome Hyperlapse Videos We Love

Published

on

Instagram recently launched a new camera app called Hyperlapse that adds a dose of steroids to your videos and allows you to record nifty video to create an effect that would otherwise only be possible with professional equipment.

Hyperlapse is a free download that’s available in the iTunes App Store, and if you’re wondering what it does, it’s all in the name. If you’re not familiar with what a hyperlapse is, it’s essentially a moving time-lapse video. If you seen time-lapse videos before, you’ll notice that the camera is usually stationary and doesn’t move. However, with a hyperlapse, the camera’s position constantly moves, adding a new perspective and dimension to time-lapse videos.

While creating professional-looking hyperlapse videos takes a lot of time and patience and usually requires professional photography or video gear, Instagram’s new Hyperlapse app claims to do it easily with just your iPhone or iPad in hand.

The app uses your iPhone’s gyroscope during filming and then levels out the footage, similar to stabilization techniques used in many cameras and video-editing software. From there, the app then speeds up the video to create the time-lapse portion (or you can leave as real-time). And then, it combines the two to create a hyperlapse.

All it takes is a bit of creativity in order to make a really cool video with Hyperlapse, and many users have already created some really cool videos with the new app. Here are 10 videos created with Hyperlapse that you won’t want to stop watching. And if you want to create awesome hyperlapse videos of your own, here are some tips and tricks you can use.

Chicago at Warp-Speed

Chicago is one of the best cities in the midwest and while it’s full of people traveling quickly to where they need to be, you’ve never seen Chicago at this speed before.

The video features a montage of different landmarks around Chicago, including Sears Tower, Millennium Park, The Bean, Grant Park, and even the shore along the coast. Plus, there are a few scenes driving on the busy Chicago highways while looking up at the tall buildings.

Overlook of Queensboro Bridge

This short video gives you a quick look at the Queensboro Bridge going from Roosevelt Island going into Midtown Manhatten from a gondola.

Frankly, all the video really needs is some dramatic music and it could be used in the next Batman movie.

The Champs-Elysees in Paris

One of the most famous stretches of road in the entire world can now be viewed in fast-forward.

The video gives you a brief look at what it’s like to walk along the Champs-Elysees with its numerous stores and restaurants, and the video finishes with a quick look down along the street to Arc de Triomphe.

The Ants Go Marching On

Ants are awesome, but they’re even better when recorded through the Hyperlapse app.

The video technically isn’t a “hyperlapse” by definition and merely just a regular time-lapse, but you’ll forget all about the technicalities after watching these ants scurry around.

Here Comes the President

Ever wonder how Marine One enters and lands on White House properly? Very carefully.

You can see in the short clip that there are three Marine One helicopters, with only one carrying the President. You can watch the two decoys fly off while the real one comes in to land on the White House lawn.

Paving the Way

Ever wonder what it looks like to pave a new road? This uneventful, yet interesting clip shows you how construction workers pave roads.

The big paver lays down the asphalt while other workers stay on the ground and make sure it goes on smoothly, with a couple of rollers driving over the newly-laid asphalt to smooth it out. Now only if construction actually went this quickly.

Skateboarding Down the Open Road

This video isn’t time-lapsed or anything, and actually plays in real-time, but it shows you the impressive image stabilization abilities of the Hyperlapse app.

Normally, you’d need a Steadicam mount to duplicate these results, and that can cost quite a bit of money. However, the Hyperlapse app makes it look beautiful with just an iPhone in hand.

Overlooking the Grand Canyon

This one is pretty basic and simple, but it shows you just how big the Grand Canyon is compared to us puny humans.

The video makes the Grand Canyon in the background look like a painting, and having stand still while everything else in the shot moves really fast is kind of mind-boggling.

Cruising by the Sydney Opera House

What does it look like when you record a Hyperlapse video of the Sydney Opera House riding by it on a boat?

Again, the stabilization is impressive, and it could easily be used in a scene in the next romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock.

Choo! Choo!

You might think you’re living in old wild west from watching this train go through the desert cliffs, but this is still 2014.

Plus, the visible highway at the beginning of the video kind of gives it away.
