10 Things to Know About the iPhone 4s iOS 8.4.1 Update

Published

on

Last week, Apple released its iOS 8.4.1 update to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users around the world. It’s small but important and it’s an update that iPhone 4s users need to know about as we approach the iOS 9 release. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the most important things to know about the iPhone 4s iOS 8.4.1 update.

On June 30th, Apple released its iOS 8.4 update, a major iOS upgrade that replaced iOS 8.3 on iOS 8 powered devices all over the world. At the time, it wasn’t clear if Apple would roll out another iOS 8 update ahead of the iOS 9 release that’s confirmed for the fall.

In July, we got our answer in the form of iOS 8.4.1, an update that landed in beta with a mysterious change log and a mysterious release date.

When Apple confirmed the iOS 8.4.1 update it failed to confirm its contents or an iOS 8.4.1 release date leaving those announcements for another date. That date, as we you might know, landed last week when Apple took the iOS 8.4.1 update out of beta and released it to the public.

iOS 8.4.1 is much smaller than iOS 8.4 though it’s still an extremely important update. For one it comes with some crucial fixes and two, it has the potential to affect the performance on your iPhone 4s.

As we’ve moved away from last week’s iOS 8.4.1 release date, we’ve started to learn more about the iOS 8.4.1 update and its performance. Many iPhone users, including those with the iPhone 4s, want to know how the update is performing. We don’t blame them. New updates have a tendency to wreck havoc on older phones.

With that in mind we want to take a look at the most important things to know about iOS 8.4.1 for iPhone 4s. This covers the right now and it also covers what you need to know about the iPhone 4s iOS 8.4.1 update as we make our way towards the iOS 9 release date.

We've been using the iOS 8.4.1 update on a number of devices not called iPhone 4s. That said, there are plenty of people who are using the iPhone 4s iOS 8.4.1 update and many of them have been nice enough to offer feedback to the rest of us.

We've been poking around Apple's discussion forums, social media sites and YouTube for feedback about the iPhone 4s iOS 8.4.1 update and what we've seen is a mixture of opinions when it comes to performance.

Some iPhone 4s users are having a good experience on iOS 8.4.1 though others are having problems with the software. Many iPhone 4s users continue to swear by Apple's iOS 7.1.2 update and a video comparing the two appears to show why.

If you own an iPhone 4s, it would be wise to dig into feedback on Apple's forums, on social media and on YouTube before you install the update. The update seems to be hit or miss and you'll want to be absolutely sure that you want and need Apple's iOS update.

With iOS 9 and its enhancements on the way, it might not be worth the risk for a lot of you.

Who still uses an iPhone 4S? And, more importantly why? It’s a relic.

I do own a 4S, bought it new two years ago at my phone operator shop and it still work fine for how I use it. I don’t see any reason to switch to a newer device as this one works and provides me what I need… so don’t be so haughty and spoiled, not everyone need the finest new stuff to show off ;)

I use one too. It was a great phone until iOS 8 made it so slow you could watch text you typed play back like slow motion video, WiFi drop out routinely, and its own built-in apps crash regularly. You know, the real demanding, cutting edge functions like email, and text messaging . Yeah. The same features I should’ve guessed I’d need the latest, greatest, $700 phone to accomplish.

Me too. If we all throw away our phones just to get the newest one as soon as it’s released, how do you think it’s gonna end?

I bought a 4s because I actually prefer the shape to the others – ie it’s not a long letterbox shape and the side profile is more distinctive.

I use a 4s. Why is it imperative to replace something that’s working fine? You’re obviously under 30 years old.

Please consider the relevance of the move to IOS 9 from IOS 7.1 in your next updates, not only from IOS 8. And thank you !

I like the haughty and spoiled. They are happy to sell their old “relics” for very reasonable prices! Thank you for your obsession with the newest and the best. Keep it up!

Exactly! you are so right! I got my 4s for free from a relative who upgraded and the 4s still works great! Also grabbing the “relics” still looking sharp and very cheap from the obsessed to upgrade ones on ebay is a lot of fun!

Apple loves the haughty and spoiled, too! The rest of us peons with year+ old phones? Not so much.

I use mine as an iPod for my car so if it gets stolen, it isn’t a big loss

I think we should be given the option to revert to older iOS. I don’t like to spend high bucks and be restricted to frequent updates. It’s not what I purchased and most of all I find updates mess up with my provider causing nonsense and slowing it down instead rather than fixes.

Has anyone downloaded 8.4.1 onto their 4s and noticed your phone slow down a lot?

The 4s is the first smart phone I ever had. I still have it it but won’t update from version 8.4 after hearing about all these problems people are having with 9.2. I will upgrade my phone at some point but don’t like feeling like Apple is doing this intentionally just to get people to buy phones. I like iPhone but won’t forget there are options.
