10 Ways the Galaxy Note 4 Could Beat the iPhone 6

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release is confirmed and Samsung’s Next Big Thing will be arriving on shelves in October to battle top Android devices and a brand new iPhone 6. With an iPhone 6 release date rumored for September, we want to take a look at how Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Note 4 release could beat Apple’s new iPhone.

For the past eight months, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and iPhone 6 have dominated the smartphone rumor mill. iPhone 6 specs, Galaxy Note 4 specs, iPhone 6 release rumors, and Galaxy Note 4 release rumors were rampant in the days leading up to September and today, one of the devices finally made the shift from rumor to reality.

Today in Berlin, Samsung announced the all new Galaxy Note 4, a successor to the Galaxy Note 3 and a device that the company will market as its flagship when it arrives on shelves later this year. As expected, the Galaxy Note 4 will come with some huge upgrades including a new design made of textured plastic and metal, a massive high-resolution display, speedy processor, and more.

Note-4-3

The Galaxy Note 4 release date will land sometime in October with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon all confirming the device for arrival in the United States. What this means is that the Galaxy Note 4 could potentially arrive weeks after the iPhone 6, Apple’s new flagship that’s expected to touch down next week in California.

Apple’s iPhone 6 is also rumored to be a juggernaut, also rumored to have a large screen and also rumored to have a fall release date. With an iPhone 6 release date rumored for September, consumers are taking a look at both the iPhone 6 rumors and the all new Galaxy Note 4. With the Galaxy Note 4 on shelves and iPhone 6 rumors firming up, we can now make a more detailed comparison between the two.

Here, we take a look at 10 ways we think the Galaxy Note 4 could beat the iPhone 6 when it arrives later on this year.

Multitasking

One of the features that Samsung has absolutely nailed throughout the years is multitasking. The Galaxy Note series’ large screen is perfect for TouchWiz’s assortment of multitasking features including Multi-Window View, a feature that the company has souped up with the Galaxy Note 4.

Multi-Window View, at its most basic level, allows users to run multiple applications on screen at the same time. It’s a key Galaxy Note 4 feature and one that is extremely useful thanks to the Galaxy Note’s large, high-resolution display. With the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung has made some admirable changes including the ability to access applications in full, split or pop-up screens. Galaxy Note 4 users will now also be able to reposition apps on the screen with just one swipe.

iOS 8 rumors point to split-screen multitasking for the iPad but those rumors also suggest that the feature may not be ready in time for the iOS 8.0 release this fall. We also haven’t heard anything about this feature for the iPhone 6 which means that Apple’s new large screened smartphone (rumors suggest that it will come in 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches) may come with Apple’s current multitasking platform, a platform that is simply inferior to the experience found on the Galaxy Note.

S Pen

The Galaxy Note 4 will be coming with a new and improved S Pen, the S Pen being the stylus that’s been bundled with the Galaxy Note for four-generations. After four-generations, Samsung’s made some significant improvements including better handwriting, pressure recognition, increased sensitivity, a new calligraphy mode, improvements to the S Pen’s applications including, Air Command, S Note and Voice Memo, and more.

Note-4-5

Samsung’s S Pen is not a gimmick. It’s evolved into an extremely useful tool that’s perfect for jotting down notes in class or during a business meeting, sharing content with friends and family, and writing and drawing on the display. The new S Pen will be a key component of the Galaxy Note 4 and an advantage that the Galaxy Note 4 should have over the iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 isn’t expected to feature a stylus.

Fast Charging

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 4 comes with Fast Charging also called Adaptive Fast Charging & QC2.0. This will allow users to charge the Galaxy Note 4’s massive 3,220mAh battery to half capacity in just 30 minutes. The Galaxy Note 4 already has a massive battery that should provide tons of battery life and this new fast charging feature should make it even more attractive.

The iPhone 6 is also expected to feature a large battery though it may not be in possession of fast charging capabilities. This may seem like a small feature but it’s certainly one that buyers come to appreciate when charging a large smartphone.

Ultra Power Saving Mode

The Galaxy Note 4 will also come with the Ultra Power Saving Mode that arrived with the Galaxy S5 earlier this year.

Ultra Power Saving mode turns the screen black and white and limits app access while still letting you make calls, send texts, use the internet and other features. This is designed to help you make even a 5% of the battery last all night when you can’t get to a charger. With 30% battery life, the Galaxy S5 can last almost 5 days in standby. It should offer something similar with the Galaxy Note 4

iOS 8, at least the iOS 8 that’s in the beta program, does not come with a feature like Ultra Power Saving Mode and there’s a chance that the iPhone 6 won’t get a similar battery life optimization through software.

Replaceable Battery

Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy Note 4’s design comes with some of the usual bells and whistles. One of those features is a removable back which allows users to manually pull out the battery. This makes it easy to replace if it goes bad or if you need some more juice by way of an extended battery. It’s a small feature but a likeable one.

The iPhone 6 design probably won’t incorporate a removable back and thus, users will be stuck with whatever battery Apple decides to put inside the design. The company typically offers solid iPhone battery life but those that want more might have to find other ways of achieving better battery life on Apple’s new iPhone.

Storage

iPhones don’t come with microSD card slots for expanded storage and iPhone 6 design leaks don’t point to any significant change to that policy. What this means is that the Galaxy Note 4 will almost certainly deliver more storage space than the iPhone 6.

The Galaxy Note 4 comes with 32GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot that Samsung says can take up to a 64GB microSD card. We’re guessing that it’s compatible with a 128GB microSD card as well though that remains unconfirmed at this point. What this means is that the Galaxy Note 4, at the very least, can expand up to 128GB. And should it take 128GB microSD cards, 192GB of storage. And that’s not even including the cloud.

Samsung is partnering with DropBox to deliver 50GB of free cloud storage to Galaxy Note 4 users. It’s part of the Samsung Gifts initiative that the company will be offering to buyers.

iPhone 6 rumors point to a 128GB model but that remains unconfirmed and while the company’s iOS 8 update will deliver some big improvements to iCloud storage, there are limitations.

QHD Display

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 4 comes with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display which means 2560 x 1440 resolution. Quad HD isn’t a gimmick. It delivers crisp, beautiful content that outpaces the Retina Display on the iPhone 5s. The comparison to full HD can be seen in the video below.

Quad HD is going to be perfect for gaming, watching content, browsing the web, all key features of any large screen smartphone. Apple’s iPhone 6 is rumored to have a Retina Display though rumors point to resolution that’s lesser than Quad HD resolution.

While nothing is confirmed, there’s a chance that the Galaxy Note 4’s QHD Super AMOLED display will best the new, larger displays that Apple tacks onto the iPhone 6.

Camera Modes

The Galaxy Note 4 software will improve the camera application, an application that already bests the one found in iOS 7 and iOS 8 on the iPhone. The Galaxy Note 4’s software will come with a number of modes including HDR (rich tone) Selective Focus, Rear-cam Selfie, Beauty face, Virtual Tour Shot, Shot & More, Dual Camera, Front Facing Camera: Selfie, and Wide Selfie. These in addition to a camera app that’s already loaded with features.

Note-4-6

It’s also worth noting that the Galaxy Note 4 camera will come with a 16MP sensor that’s supported by Smart OIS and its capable of shooting video up to Ultra HD (3840 × 2160) resolution at 30 frames per second. It also delivers a 3.7MP front-facing camera that comes with up to a 120 degree viewing angle and the ability to shoot WQHD (2560×1440) video.

The iPhone 6 is expected to have a new camera sensor though it’s not clear if it will come with electronic image stabilization, optical image stabilization or neither. We also haven’t heard anything about its front-facing camera which means that there’s a chance we could see it come with the same FaceTime HD camera that’s found on the iPhone 5s.

Sensors

iPhone 6 rumors have pointed to new sensors including a barometer but they have not pointed to a heart beat sensor or a UV sensor, two of the key sensors found on board the Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy Note 4 will offer users a heart rate sensor to track their pulse through the company’s S Health application. It will also come with a UV sensor that allows users to track UV radiation. This is on top of the Accelerometer, Geo-magnetic, Gyroscope, RGB, Proximity, Barometer, Hall Sensor, Finger Scanner, and SoO2 (dependent on market) senors that are already on board.

These sensors are going to be key for fitness freaks and those that spend a great deal of time in the sun. And as we’ve pointed out, that UV sensor could potentially save your life.

IR Port

We haven’t seen any iPhone 6 design leaks hint at the inclusion of an IR port. The Galaxy Note 4 does come with an IR port which means that it can easily connect to most TV and entertainment systems. This port essentially turns the Galaxy Note 4 into a high-powered remote control. It may not seem like much but there are plenty of people that can no longer live without this feature.

With only 20GB left on the 32GB Note 4 I will be looking for a 64GB version otherwise I will stick with my 32GB Note3 despite the nice features on the Note 4. The cost of upgrading without more internal memory would be a waste for me despite already having a 128Gb card installed. With an ever increasing number of memory hungry apps even 32GB is beginning to look skimpy – presumably why Apple has offered 128GB devices in the past – a trend that the iPhone6 will almost certainly follow. Internal memory is faster than card memory and some apps and their data can’t use the card without rooting and Galaxy Knox makes that a no – no for some worried about warranties.

Mind if I ask a question? I’m asking because you seem to really know the ins and outs of the Note. I’m currently using an S4 and plan on upgrade to a Note 4. I’m wondering if a Note 3 will do the job just fine for me. I primarily want it for writing notes in meetings. I don’t take many pictures and have never played a game on a phone. I’m just not interested. I do love the e-reader apps, e-commerce apps and maps. What do you think, should I get the 3 now or wait for the 4?

Add to the 10, no back button, limited customisation, limited use of widgets, inferior standard apps, inadequate sharing, have to use sim extractor, easily damaged and probably inferior battery life.
