The 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 model that arrived ons tore shelves last month brought an annoying bug with it that resulted in sporadic touchpad and keyboard freezes.

Apple confirmed the issue in a statement last week, offering a temporary fix to users who found their computer temporarily useless, often in the middle of editing a document.

This week Apple pushed out an official fix through the Mac App Store. The free update for the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 model is listed as ‘Macbook Pro Retina EFI Update v1.3’. Though the naming doesn’t offer much in the way of what this fixes, Apple states,

This update is recommended for MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, late 2013) models.

This update addresses an issue where the built-in keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive

Users can check for new updates in the Mac App Store on the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina and should see the update listed there. Click update to download the file and install the new software. This process will vary based on your internet speed, so set aside a little time to complete the update.

The computer will restart and install the EFI update to the MacBook Pro Retina. Users may see a gray screen during this process, so do not be alarmed.

When the installation is complete users will need to log back in to the computer to continue working. We installed the EFI Update v1.3 yesterday and have not experienced the freezing issues again. These intermittent touchpad and keyboard freezing issues should be gone, but if you experience them again, close the lid of the MacBook Pro for one minute and it should fix the issue. If this happens after the update alert Apple in the support forums.
