17 Essential Windows 10 Apps

Published

on

Introduced in Windows 8.1, the Windows Store was a disaster. Search was terrible, and the apps you could find weren’t very useful. What’s more, Microsoft did very little to boost the profile of the Windows Store. Users at home didn’t bother with the Windows Store for apps because there was hardly anything there they could appreciate. In turn, developers ignored it too; they preferred to concentrate on apps that users could download freely from the web or skipping Windows entirely. Microsoft has put in a lot of work so that Windows 10 apps change that destructive cycle.

Windows 10 refreshes the store. Microsoft has moved its movies, television and music stores to the Windows Store, making it more likely that users will visit. It retooled the Windows Store’s design, making it mouse and touch-friendly while still providing users with the information they need about their apps. Microsoft is making it easier for iPhone and Android developers to create Windows 10 apps too. Windows 10 apps sold in the Windows Store work on notebooks, tablets, desktops, Windows 2-in-1s, smartphones and the Xbox One

It’s too early to say whether these changes will result in a bustling Windows Store filled with Windows 10 apps and games that are on the same level as iPhone and Android versions. Microsoft hasn’t done a very good job of convincing companies and small businesses that they need an app in its store. It’s also switched things like the underlying platform needed to create an app for the store a few times. Developers are responding to the positive changes, but it’ll be years before we see the fruits of Microsoft’s work.

The Windows Store does have some essential Windows 10 apps users will want to download as soon as possible. Here they are.

Microsoft’s Office apps are the stuff of productivity legend. Chances are that if you need to get anything done, you’re doing it in Microsoft Office. Microsoft wants to keep that streak going and that’s why the Office Mobile apps for Windows exist. They embrace a future where Office is something you can download through the Windows Store and use with a notebook, desktop or tablet. They have a monthly or yearly subscription built-in, not a high, one-time fee.

Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, OneNote Mobile are all available for anyone to download free of charge in the Windows Store. Each of them can be used to read documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Creating anything in them from the ground up requires an Office 365 Subscription.
