Fujitsu u1010/u810 all the way
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 2:14:06 PM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
If the OLPC clones were included, I'd choose the Asus Eee PC by far. It has gained the most impact.
Otherwise, I'm choosing the Samsung Q1U even though I bought a Fujitsu U810.
It has nice balance of size, speed, battery life, and price. Best in class screen.
I would have gone with the Kohjinsha SH8/Vye S37 if it weren't for the battery life issues.

OQO 02, since it's announcement spawned all the thumb keyboard wannabe's, sub 7" screens, and built in wireless broadband. Although the 01, Sony UX, & a few others already had these features, it was not until the OQO 02 came out with with a more improved release that the clones & MID's came out of the woodwork with many more being announced.

Also sexiest UMPC of 2007, OQO seems to keep improving its features, first UMPC to really support Vista with stable drivers, great CEO interaction with consumers, and on my opinion still the only full performance Windows based UMPC that fits in most shirt front pockets.

Truely full PC mobility available anywhere & anytime!

UX490

First UMPC with 48GB SSD, and first UMPC to include 64-bit CPU.
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 7:04:42 PM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
Fujitsu P1610d with 2GB ram and Vista business. Maybe doesn't meet all requirements but I waited until it shipped with Vista so it'd be fully supported (then downgraded to XP :)).

Best all rounder, screen size, tablet functions, weight, battery life, power.
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 8:23:31 PM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
UMPC of the year? OQO model 02, hands down. With its 1.6 GHz VIA C7-M, 1GB of RAM, integrated WWAN, 32GB SSD hard drive, plus it's excellent thumb-board it just can't be beat in pure usability.
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 10:56:14 PM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
Fujitsu UMPC U1010 or U810 or U8240 (same machines).. The only convertible/hybrid UMPC....

I'd say the Fujitsu U810 is the only one that approaches a good value.

The OQO Model 02 seems to be a very effective ultra-mobile.

The Asus eee even though it doesn't seem to count, is the only one to make a splash outside the niche market.

Well, I hereby nominate Raon Everun as the best UMPC.

Reasoning is simple - Raon got it right.
Their machine is a compact, more-or-less pocketable design, but with battery life much longer than in any of the competition (8-10 hours of really serious use on extended battery) which ensures real ultraportability, making it a truly ultramobile system. Even more, they did acomplish it by sacrificing only a fraction of performance, the Everun can still run WinXP, Office 2007, Photoshop, all with quite decent perfomance.

Connectivity is also quite strong, it has BT, Wifi, and HSDPA/Wibro option (the pci-e slot can be fitted with some different cards, ensuring some upgrade capability).
Also, Everun seems to be one of the cheapest UMPCs around - starting at 689 euros http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/860 and, hey, btw, it runs quake 2 and Starcraft very well!

The drawbacks are that it has only 512 mb RAM, and has not enough power to satisfy Vista (my god, who needs Vista anyway) and very limited 3D acceleration support (OpenGL in Q2 initialises okay, but I cannot guarantee similare results in other games). However, in case you are not a Vista affectionado, Everun has all you might need.

P.S.: Also worth mentioning is the fact that Raon support people are very nice.

Samsung Q1U
-4 hours of battery life (8 hours with extended battery)
-1024x600 native resolution
-non-sliding and very practical physical keyboard

For some reason you've excluded it in the criteria, but the Eee PC is one of the only true ultramobiles and one of the few tech gadgets I've ever seen to captivate both techies and non techies alike.

P1610 - hands down; small size - full featured
Thursday, December 20, 2007 9:21:08 PM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
The Everun - it does just that - it runs forever. What good are all those other expensive capabilities if the thing is only good for an hour? I can take the everun on the road all day, surfing, emailing, excell, word...Awesome!

Defenitely the OQO 02, because it is small and has the best overall form factor

Saturday, December 22, 2007 9:14:25 AM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
If it needs a touchscreen and is based on bang per buck: Everun
If it needs a touchscreen and is based on overall design and implementation: OQO 02

If it doesn't need a touchscreen, then its the EEE PC (it makes the ultraportable affordable, and I believe will introduce the whole concept of ultramobile PCs to the masses)

If the award is based on the device that will have the most impact on the category in the coming year, I would say the OQO 02. If the award is based on gee wiz factor, I would say the OQO 02. OK actually no matter what the award is based on, I would say the OQO 02. :)
