Lenovo X200 Tablet PC vs Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC – SD Cards

One of the first things I want to see on a tablet pc is how far the sd card sticks out. I know it sounds like a strange thing to be worried about, but when I’m using a tablet pc in portrait mode, it frustrates me a lot when the sd card sticks out, making it easy to bump against, accidentally eject, and more
 
Lenovo designed their SD card slot very well  in their new X200 Tablet PC. It has a nice recess making the card flush with the casing, which is very important when using the tablet in portrait mode. In addition, the slot is positioned perfectly with the casing which makes it easy to eject the card with a finger, but doesn’t accidentally eject in a case. In other words – it is the best of both worlds!
 
Dell, on the other hand, has got to have one of the worlds worst SD card slots  in their Latitude XT. The card sticks out way too far, is too easily ejectible when the tablet is used in portrait mode or when the tablet is placed in a case. It has been one my big frustrations with the XT.

    Whoa, why does the SD card stick out at all, let alone by such a noticeable amount? My Toshiba R25 has a multi-card slot that holds the cards flush, even with lengthier Memory Sticks. I’d probably be worried about that card sticking out too.

    Do you really leave a card in the slot permanently so that its that concerning? I mean, my SD cards are constantly in my Wii, my camera, my n800, my phone, etc. Its only on transfering something new that the card goes into my PC reader, and as soon as its done, it goes back where it came from.

    I sure do, Joe. I’ll frequently have a card in a Tablet PC all the time for moving data between computers. Comes in handy when at client sites – almost like a storage place. It is enough of an issue for me that I wanted to point it out….

    Aah okay. Well if there’s a reason for you to have a card in there at all times, then it definitely makes sense as a concern.

    I actually leave a Micro SD card adapter in mine all the time also, so that would be a real problem for me as well.

    I use my 4GB SD card (class 6) as Vista ReadyBoost. Unfortunately, the SD card sometimes pops out when I put it in/out of bag. I wish my XT doesn’t stick out as much.

    I always keep a 8GB SDHC card in my x200 Tablet as well (great machine by the way). It rarely if ever goes into a camera. I use it as a small solid state disk that I can use as non-volatile removeable storage. For this reason I am very glad that it sits flush (the WWAN antenna also helps to protect it when you place the computer in a bag).

    It is also convenient to use an SD card for media playback due to the active protection system. If you rotate a Thinkpad while playing back media (common if you hold it as a slate) the playback will skip for a second because of the active protection system. This is done to protect the drive by dynamically lifting the heads from the platters if the computer moves (it uses an accelerometer to monitor this). However, this valuable feature can be annoying if you are trying to watch a movie. If you use an SD card to hold the file you can move the computer all you want because it has no moving parts.
