EverNote Adds Local Storage to iPhone/iPod Touch

Published

on

EverNote continues to evolve and change on some fronts and each step is a good one in my opinion. The fact that you can experience EverNote across multiple platforms and multiple devices makes it a race to keep up at times as we’ll see an update for the Windows Client, then the Mac Client, then the web interface…

This latest update adds something that I think ups the ante for iPhone and iPod Touch users: local storage of notes. Essentially once you have a note in the EverNote cloud, if you want off-line access to it, you make it a favorite on your iPhone/iPod Touch and you can have access to the note without having to have a connection.

I’m assuming (and hoping) the same thing will happen for Windows Mobile devices soon as well. Now, if the good folks at EverNote can just find some time to work on the Inking engine and also move to let us see Inked notes on the Mac client, life will get even better.

UPDATE: Thanks to a a commentor on this post, it looks like EverNote took one step forward and for us Inkers, two steps back. While I can see thumbnails of Ink Posts on my iPhone, I can no longer see the Ink Post itself when I go to call it up. I can’t swear that this occured with just this recent update, but I do believe it did. Not a good thing, EverNote.

UPDATE 2: Twitter to the rescue here. Just got a direct message on Twitter from EverNote saying that not seeing Ink Notes on the iPhone is a bug and they are working to fix it tonight.

On a related note, I’ve noticed Evernote on my iPhone has been very reliable with storing pending notes that are waiting to be sync’d, even when I switch apps. Between this and the new favorites feature, Evernote sounds like a real winner for the iPod touch, minus the option for photo notes.

I was initially very excited with the idea of Evernote 3, but I’ve been disappointed with the windows mobile implementation and what appears to be a desire to develop the iphone platform, leaving the windows mobile lagging behind. I’ve a lot of data in OneNote and am reluctant to switch over to Evernote because of this. Now I’m tending to compromise & stick with OneNote hoping office 14 will deliver a better solution. I think Evernote needs to get up to speed and build up a user base before office 14 comes out next year sometime.

I don’t mean to be negative but inking on the iphone would be a gimmick. The screen just isn’t mean for a stylus and doing handwriting with a finger just isn’t natural.

@vm-01: You aren’t being negative. I think inking on the iPhone would be a not much more than a gimmick also.

@rob: OneNote has real chance to make a dent in EverNote’s momentum. I’m excited to see what we see there. Maybe it will finally wake the folks who work with Ink at Evernote pay attention.

Regarding inking on the iPhone, I think one of my standard Tablet PC defenses apply: inking is superior for character-based languages. iPhone users in Japan (probably works here too) have the option to write in kanji instead of typing words phonetically. That’s why there’s an iPhone stylus made in Japan (sold in the states by ThinkGeek). So while I agree inking on the iPhone would be gimmicky for us, that’s not true for everyone.

I’d rather have mixed note support in the Windows client first. No annotations of images if ridiculous. Especially in a program that has ink.

At least we now have the possibility of OneNote’s web app allowing similar sync features with better tablet support. Probably no iphone client though.

Oh… and since the upgrade I cant view ink notes on my iphone. AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGH!

AND while I’m on a rant.. You know what bugs me most about Evernote..

…. is that they had it almost perfect with the Windows Mobile Preview for Evernote v2. Inking, local storage on the device, the lot. All they needed to do was add the cloud stuff and it is perfect. But, no… they had to give us a taste of what it COULD be like and then take it away.

p.s. i still use it every day though…

Check out the updates on the post. EverNote is planning to fix a bug that causes InkNotes not to be viewable on the iPhone.
