Is The Android G1 Capable of Multi-Touch?

Published

Interesting. From this video, (and another one on the site), it looks like it might be. But the catch is there is no software for the platform to take advantage of it.

Is that guy some sort of an idiot? That happens, if the G1 really uses a resistive touch screen (which HTC has been known to use), because the additional finger increases pressure on the screen, thus increasing the resistance, which screws up where the mouse is pointing. To the device, it would seem like the mouse has moved somewhere between the two fingers depending on the pressure gradient on the screen. DEFINITELY NOT MULTITOUCH

You can do this with any laptop touchpad. This is not multitouch. It is only getting one X and one Y. When you touch it in multiple places, all it does is move the X and Y of the touch location inbetween your fingers.

The G1 screen might support multitouch, but it would have to be enabled at the hardware level I believe.

I don’t have hard information straight from HTC or T-Mobile. But according to several sources, the G1 does have a capacitive touch screen. Try Googling it, this isn’t news.

However, AFAIK, Android doesn’t support multi-touch at this moment. Will it be implemented in the future? My guess is yes, but when?

Besides, let’s not forget the G1 is going to be only ONE of the devices running Android. Will other devices also utilize capacitive touch? Or a touch screen at all?

BTW, Warner, this is the 1st time I heard someone calling it “The Android G1″… : )

    Cheers!
