Lots of confusion about what is or is not going on with WiBrain this morning. According to Steve “Chippy” Paine at UMPCPortal, WiBrain might be going out of business.

There’s no official confirmation on this as of yet, but Steve points up a couple of facts that make it look not good. WiBrain had reportedly shelved its latest ultra-mobile the WiBrain i1 and now the site appears to be down. Here’s hoping this is just a temporary thing.

What is the big to do about UMPC? I mean what markets where they aligned with? My understanding is that UMPC are convenient devices that are geared towards those who hate to lug around their notebooks for work and play. However, I don’t think that I personally would lug one of these around in replacement for a trusty laptop to crunch out some numbers on excel or edit presentations with. UMPC are just overpriced web surfing, email checking devices that can’t really do more than that efficiently enough to warrant replacing your laptop. I think Smart phones are replacing these niche devices with the functionality comparable to UMPC. So if you use one let me know what you use it for.

You may lug around your laptop, but you don’t lug one of these around; you put it in your pocket.

But seriously I find it really useful.

I have to travel for an hour and a half to get to college, its so much easier when you can just pull it out in two seconds instead of fumbling with laptop cases and needing to pick a seat with a table on the train.
I can use it as a laptop replacement with ease, and if i need a better resolution for something i just use a ‘spare’ monitor.
