Evernote Creates Its Own Mesh

We talk about Evernote quite a bit here, simply because we like the cross platform application a lot. (Even though we’re still waiting for some additions and further tweaks, like being able to view Ink in the Mac client.) Well, today, Evernote continued to up the ante by adding a new feature for Premium account members. Essentially you can now add any file (Word, Excel, etc .) to your Evernote Notebooks and they will sync up in Evernote’s cloud and be available to you on any of your devices. On either the Mac or the PC clients (I haven’t tested the mobile clients yet) you can simply drag and drop a file into an Evernote Notebook and it will be there on all of your devices.

I’m sure questions are popping up about Evernote’s searching ability because the behind the scenes recognition that allows searching of images and PDFs works very well and is a key feature. At this point they’ve added a search parameter that allows for searching of a file name, but you can’t search within a document that you add this way. That said, if you drag and drop a text file into a note, it becomes the content of that note and thus is searchable.

There are some heady implications for this new feature as this positions Evernote as more than just a cross-platform repository to store and retrieve things from the Web, voice clips, mage files, and the like. With a Premium membership, you can actually store, sync, retrieve and share files, which I think opens up a number of options for users and for the company itself.

If you’ve got the Evernote client installed you should be prompted to install the updated version the next time you open the program, or you can choose to update it from the Help Menu. Remember you have to have a Premium membership to take advantage of this new feature.

This is all new and coming out as I write this post, and I’ll update as I experiment further.
