Dragon Medical 10 update, take a look!

Okay, I get that many of you may not be overly excited by reading about speech recognition. But, there are some of us who think speech recognition is just fascinating. I still derive great pleasure from talking to my computer. I am constantly amazed by the ability for a computer to understand my spoken language and translate that into the written word.

Several months ago I received Dragon Medical 10 and installed the program on a Motion 1600 tablet computer. This tablet had been my daily driver for several years as a computer. I previously used Dragon Professional Nine with my electronic medical record. Depending on how I felt, I would use the built in voice array and then switch it out for an external USB microphone. I found that over all my accuracy was very good to excellent with overall accuracy of approximately 98%. Of course, I am never happy with any mistakes.

I had used Dragon Professional for many years and this has been my first venture into Dragon Medical. I found that the Dragon Medical program ran somewhat slower than I would have preferred. This was not a problem from the program, but rather was a result of my hardware being only marginally effective. I decided to stick with Dragon Medical 10 and move to a different tablet computer.

I chose and bought a Lenovo X200. This has been a fantastic change! I have always been satisfied, in the past seven or eight years, with Dragon’s recognition ability. Each new version showed improvement. It was always enough to whet my appetite to come back again. But now, with a new tablet computer and Dragon Medical 10 I actually am running even greater/notable levels of accuracy. I have not done a formal assessment but I can tell you that there have been days where I have spoken several thousand words with only minimal correction.

This was a costly financial investment. For me, it has been worth every cent. A state of the art program on a state of the art computer has led to state-of-the-art outcomes in terms of accuracy. My mild frustration from previous versions of Dragon has disappeared. I still need to proof read everything to be on the safe side. BUT WOW!

I can go for paragraphs at a time without needing to make a correction. There is no lag between speaking and the words being printed on my screen. As always, there is never a spelling issue. I still speak my punctuation rather than using the automatic punctuation that the program offers. If you were wondering whether the average person could have this outcome I would have to say yes. It might take you some time, but the time investment would be worth the outcome. Speech recognition has always rocked! Now, I hope I can inspire some of you to take the plunge.

Music to my ears. I’m in the process of leading a large group of physicians in EMR adoption, and a number of them will likely want to try speech recognition since their typing skills are not adequate. Sounds like Dragon Medical might be worth a look.

How much RAM do you have in your X200, John?

I went crazy with 4gb of ram. I am using a Sennheiser wired headset, I tried the array microphones and did not have as much success as Digital doc has had. BTW: Sennheiser is asking what microphones I would like to try. I am asking for any bluetooth that might work well.
