OQO - Current Model 02

As an attendee of Digital Experience, I just got a list of vendors planning to present at Digital Experience emailed to me; and, what do I find but this little nugget of info listing OQO as a presenter, announcing their Model 2+ featuring the 1.86 ghz Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, and an embedded touchscreen. This makes a marked change for OQO’s current Model 02, which has a 1.6 ghz Via processor, max of 1GB of RAM, and only an active digitizer. No word on whether their new touchscreen will also support active pen input and whether it is capacitive touch. I can’t wait to get my hands on that puppy.

From the Digital Experience email I received:

OQO, Inc. announces the new model 2+ with the Intel ® Atomâ„¢ processor, the world’s first PC OLED display, and worldwide 3G capability. Based on the 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor and 2GB RAM, the OQO model 2+ offers performance up to twice as fast as its predecessor and includes an embedded touchscreen for easier input.

Hope the price is in line with other atom devices.
I had the oqo 2 for about a week before I had to send it back. Please price?

I don’t have that info and don’t expect to have it until next week.

Hm, if they can put in the 2GB of RAM, that must mean the Atom processor probably runs cooler than the Via. I remember Motion not putting 2GB in the LS800 because it ran too hot and caused problems. I hope the OQO still runs cooler with the bump in RAM and CPU because the fan is kinda loud.

People have been wanting a touch screen. I think a digitizer provides a much better inking experience, but on the OQO it’s hard to ink anyways with the size of the screen. Touch screen might be more convenient and offer a new interface for the OQO. I wonder how many people actually ink a lot on the OQO.

The price for the full spec unit should be about $2500-$3000 I bet. OQOs are expensive.

I’ve been waiting for a new model for a while. However, if it does not have an active digitizer I won’t be buying. Anxious to find out what OQO will have to say in this regard next week.

With the Atom it should run much cooler. Hopefully the price will start low since the OQO is nice to have but with all the MID’s in the same size it’s hard to sell something much more. I know that the OQO would have more storage than the MID’s but, for example on the Aigo I have its running Windows XP Pro fine. The only reason I would use anything this small is for web browsing, on the road. I have Live Sync so I only have my important files that I need synced to the miniSD card on the Aigo so I’m up to date. If the price for the OQO is in the 799.99 which is kind of high but not much more then some of the MID”s I might consider getting one. Keep us posted Rob.

The Atom processor has a 2.4W TDP. The Via C7M ULV as a 7.5W TDP. It’s a safe bet that the cooling system does not need to be as aggressive in the Model 2+.

If the only reason you’d use a screen this size is web browsing, then it’s unlikely you’ll need a 1.86 GHz Atom. I doubt that it will browse the web significantly more quickly than the 800MHz Atom in the Aigo. (i.e., the processor is that the bottleneck in that case.)

The OQO screen is actually about the same size as the Newton screen. i.e., about the size of a Moleskine pocket notebook. Inking works just fine on that size screen if you’re doing handwriting recognition. If you want to leave things in ink, then yeah, it’s a bit cramped.

Maybe the screen is small enough that I won’t have issues with my palm brushing the touchscreen and screwing up the inking?

It has an OLED screen. That’s pretty sweet too. I’m glad to see they went with some other newer tech than just the atom. I hope it has dual touch and active digitizer. And it’s TOO expensive (though it probably will be, for the nice model).

Why can’t Fujitsu and OQO just get in bed already. . .

Agree with DJROME. . . would love to see what these two companies could do together.

How does it compare to the brand new Sony P-series?
