Lenovo ThinkPad USB Portable Secure Hard Drive Demoed

Published

on

You know that portable hard drive sitting in your bag? What if someone got a hold of it and then had access to all of your backup and mobile data? Well, that is the kind of scenario Lenovo is hoping to address with their new USB Portable Secure Hard Drive.

Plug it in to a computer and Windows will only recognize it as a device once the 6 – 20 key password is entered on the keypad on the encrypted portable harddrive. Check the video out for a short demo.

The hard drives are available in 160gb and 320gb configurations and will be available for order soon on Lenovo.com

What if one was to disassemble the drive and then plug the hdd directly to a computer or other external hdd bay?
it sounds like it is a the password circuit is only for the physical activation off the hdd, like a switch.

Actually, the drives are available for order today. I just ordered one and was quoted 8 business days in shipping. Also, the drive is encrypted using 128bit AES, so physically transferring the drive to a external hardware bay will still render the drive useless without the encrypted key.

This site has been great, I ordered a X200T and now the drive based on the reviews and comments I’ve read here and after owning a Tablet PC since they were first introduced, including many makes and models, (Toshiba, Motion, Fujitsu, Acer, NEC) I have to say that I am throughly pleased and impressed with the X200T and I think it is the evolutionary standard.

Thanks GottaBeMobile! Keep up the great work in 2009!
