LogMeIn Comes to the iPhone

Published

on

logmeiiniphone We’ve known that LogMeIn has been coming to the iPhone for some time and now it is available. If you use LogMeIn and an iPhone this looks like it would be a good fit for you. The entry price for LogMeIn Ignition is a bit steep at $29.99 for the app (at least to give it a try out.) You’ll also have to create a LogMeIn account and there are premium paid options and a free option. Once you’re set up you can access your desktop computer from you iPhone.

Of course LogMeIn works with other mobile devices as well. I know several folks who swear by this remote access application, but my workflow doesn’t have a major need for it at present. I’d love to hear from some GBM uses who work with LogMeIn or other remote access apps on their experiences.

I use Logmein a lot. I got a Mac Mini as I wanted a quieter and more energy efficient computer I could leave running 24/7 rather than my desktop. This is for remote access to files, apps and webcam monitoring.

The iPhone Logmein works very well indeed, even over 3G. now, you’re not going to be typing a huge repor on it but for emergencies, like file access or quick access to apps it’s ideal. it’s got two input methods, one novel one moves the screen but keeps the mouse centred, and actually works really well! You can also lower your screen res via the app which is handy to view a full desktop.

That investment of $29.99, or £17.99 in my case could repay itself very quickly if you need remote access to your home pc from anywhere.

This is just getting stupid. Logmein can put people to work making an entirely new program so that IPhone users can use their services yet they can’t take the time to fix the problems that Windows Mobile users have been having. I’m glad my sticking with them and helping them stay around is being paid back by them basically saying “Windows Mobile? Whats that?” Sorry, it’s not just them but they are the last straw for me. It started with Marble World 2 where the game developer decided that us having kept him in business deserved him repaying us by charging us more than he was charging IPhone users.

I use it on my Touch Pro. Hardware keyboard will not work for inputting text on the remote computer. It worked on my 6515 and Mogul with the Touch Pro, they haven’t updated and the keyboard won’t work.

@Gavin: Looks like XDA-Developers finally fixed what Logmein wouldn’t. https://community.logmein.com/logmein/board/message?board.id=12&thread.id=12808&view=by_date_ascending&page=2
But that actually lends more point to what I said. XDA shouldn’t have had to step in. It’s Logmein’s program yet rather than fix it for the people that have been paying for it this whole time, they decide to put there developers to work making a whole new program.

Logmein free is superb – but its even better if you couple it with a dropbox (www.getdropbox.com) because once you install the dropbox on both machines you can drag and drop files between computers with the absolute minimum of fuss and for free. Logmein can do this too but you have to pay. I also use http://www.orb.com to see live shots from my webcam as my corporate pc stops skype access – you can also stream audio for free but it slows your remote pc down a lot.

This morning, for example, I downloaded cc-cleaner on my remote pc and reclaimed 900MB of disk space while it was quiet at work. And then I spied on my toddlers…. :)

I’m sure it’s not for everyone but I’ve found I do just fine with a free VNC viewer on my iTouch and a static domain name from DynDNS.

Another good remote access tool (which is also a fraction of teh cost of LogMeIn) is Techinline (https://www.techinline.com) I use it to support my computer-illiterate clients, and the process of connecting to them is probably as easy as it gets, as they don’t even have to install anything
