GBM InkShow: First Look at Asus N10 and Instant On

asusn10Thanks to the folks at Asus, I’ve got a week to play around with the Asus N10J, a netbook targeted towards business and corporate users.   Like typical netbooks, this model features the Intel Atom N270, 1 GB RAM, and a 160 GB HDD.   What sets it apart is a biometric fingerprint reader, HDMI port, switchable NVIDIA graphics, and Asus Expressgate Instant-on computing from Splashtop.   Check out the video as I take a first look at the Asus N10.

    I have the Asus N10j-A2 (2GB ram, 320GB HDD, Vista Business), and I have to say it is a pretty decent gaming/entertainment system. While it can’t play some more demanding games, if you search Youtube for “Asus N10″ or “N10J” you will find it can play a large number of other games (The Fear 2 Demo was actually decent enough for me to play). Also it plays most WMV HD files smooth (as I understand it has some hardware acceleration), and the ones it doesn’t you can put it in high performance mode and overclock the processor to 2Ghz. Flash HD content on the other hand isn’t that smooth, you can increase the performance by right clicking on the flash video and setting it’s Quality to Low.

    This is the only Atom system that I am aware of that has an NVidia processor. Which at this time makes this a very unique configuration for a netbook (although I don’t think Asus has labeled it a netbook for some reason). This system makes me very curious what NVidia’s Ion platform is going to be like for portable gaming and entertainment (hopefully it will make systems like the N10j cheaper).

    Very nice look at this netbook. Haven’t seen a review by Dillon befor but he really hit so many important aspects to me. Glossy fingerprint covers to glossy screens. Lots of informative stuff there.

    Hey, is this Matt Dillon, the guy who wrote the C compiler for the Amiga platform?

    Oh yeah, if I have spare cash then I’d but the Asus N10 with the nVidia chip.
