Amazon Kindle 2The big Amazon Kindle 2 press conference is going on right now – but you can go ahead and order yours now for $359. They start shipping on February 24. Original Kindle owners get first priority, too, if they order by midnight PST February 10th!

New features:

  • 3G – no monthly fees, no contracts, no service plans
  • Text to speech
  • Advanced scree technology for crisper reading, 16 shades of gray
  • Thinner – 1/3 of an inch, which I think is thinner than the iPhone
  • Syncing amongst other Kindles so you can read on one book and resume reading on another at the page you left off on.
  • 25% longer battery life
  • Better design to prevent accidental paging.

Tempting, very nice, but still no back light for reading in bed. That lack is taking the just-like-a-book concept too far to obtain record long-length battery life. I’d sacrifice battery life for an internal light. The Sony offers an LED reading light – I think I’ll go that direction.

The trade-offs between the 2nd Generation Sony and the 2nd Generation Kindle are more clearly drawn than with the earlier versions of each system.

The Sony (which I own and love) has the backlight, relatively easy use via USB connection to your computer (which also acts as a charger), and is 1.2 inches shorter — the other dimensions are roughly the same. It also has a touch screen and uses a stylus for annotations and uses expansion SD and Memory Stick cards (Kindle 1 had an SD slot, but Kindle 2 does not.)

The Kindle has its wireless system, an experimental text-to-speech, which really interests my wife, and navigation buttons on each side (instead of on the bottom left side of the screen on the Sony), which are more easily accessed, although the left will be a problem with the leather cover attached.

Kindle has a little more content, largely in its blogs and newspapers, but also using its online capabilities.

At the end of the day, I think it’s a question of what you want. At home here, we actually are talking about having one of each.

You can’t read Kindle in the dark? Are you serious? In that case I’ll just keep reading E books on my Palm.

Paul, I believe the Kindle 2 also allows USB for both data connection and charging now. The earlier Kindle had a proprietary charger.

I pre-ordered on of these. I can always sell it on ebay if I don’t like it and probably make a profit.

    Kindle 2 = Windows 7

The previous owners of old Kindle should receive a nice discount to bear the cost of their first published crappy product.
