HP Promises a Fix for Mini 1000 Webcam Woes

Published

on

If you’ve been following the story of the HP Mini 1000 Webcam woes today, you’ll know that the first there was one video from GearDiary, then there wasn’t as HP apparently asked that it be taken down. Then our cohorts at Notebooks.com posted up another video which we once again posted here. HP has contacted Judie at GearDiary to say that yes, there will be a method for HP Mini 1000 owners to get their webcams fixed.

Here’s a quote from Judie’s post:

The second is that I have been assured that because of this video, HP has been forced to acknowledge the ““film over the webcam” issue, and they are putting together an official statement with plan of action to properly fix customer’s Mini Notes that are affected by this problem.

Darn silly that it has to come to something like this before a problem will actually get acknowledged and taken care of, now isn’t it?

I think Judie and Amisha got the story of the year so far – showing on film an HP rep demoing how to fix a problem most mini 1000 owners suffer with and have complained about, but HP has refused to publicly talk about.

Kudos to Judie and Amisha – well done

I recently had to replace a faulty HP monitor and while HP has done a good job of “trying” to get things right, in the process they have shown to have absolutely terrible customer service. They’ve been good about going through diagnostics and agreeing to replace the monitor but I would not be exaggerating if I said I have spent at least 8 hours on the phone trying to resolve the issue. I am now on my fourth monitor and they even charged my credit card $450 dollars saying that I didn’t return the faulty monitor.

Oh but I did, I shipped it out 3 days after I received the return shipping labels that I had to call and order from them because they forgot to include. They claim my credit card was charged on the 7th and they received the monitor on the 9th. Lies, because my credit card statement shows the transaction occurred on the 13th and posted to my card on the 15th. It wasn’t a problem showing they had the monitor because I of course made sure to keep the tracking number. Believe it or not, this is the SECOND time this has happened with them for the same exact reason except the first time they sent an email, which means I had to call them and tell them that they had already received the monitor before they tried to charge my credit card.

Nevermind the fact that they made my credit card go over the limit which means I have to pay a overdraft fee for their mistake. And how in the world do they charge me $450 dollars for a broken monitor that retails for $300?

Sorry, excuse my rant. That monitor was actually a birthday present for my girlfriend along with the mini 1000. I’m going to remove the film myself from the webcam, no way in hell am I going through HP customer service again and no way am I ever purchasing anything from HP that isn’t disposable.

This has been a warning to everyone, don’t send your mini in for repair, their customer service is a nightmare. Hopefully, HP lets you bring it in to a local repair dealer, but I’m not keeping my fingers crossed.

Shame on HP for not doing anything about it till that video developed.

This is a really nice story. And shows the power of Blogging – how small problems can be brought to the attention of the masses, and how a things can get fixed. Good work.

    Mike,

I know what a hassle dealing with customer service can be, believe me! But really, you should call your credit card company and dispute the mistaken charge. You shouldn’t be penalized for HP’s error.

I have a mini 1000 and just thought the webcam was crappy and wished I hadn’t bought it. I’m sure mine has the film problem too. I wish they hadn’t removed the video. I would fix it this weekend if it were easy to do. Fortunately I don’t use it every day and probably wouldn’t miss it for a few days if I have to send it off to HP for a fix.

@Mike, sorry to hear about your troubles. I agree that you should contact your CC company and explain what happened.

@Ronald- As far as I know ALL Mini 1000’s have this problem as of today. I removed the film on mine and for someone who’s used to opening computers it’s relatively easy to do. The problem is that it can (read will) void your warranty and if you make the wrong move you can cause more problems than you solve.
