Most Awesome Netbook Accessory $2 Can Buy

Published

on

short_powerc_cableSometimes the simplest accessories can have a big impact on your mobile computing life. Jason Dunn from Digita Home Thoughts found a short power cable that works with most netbook AC adapters. This means he can ditch the bulk of his adapter’s cord at home when he needs to travel light.

Jason uses his new-found 1ft cable in favor of the bulky cable the HP Mini 1000 ships with. I agree with him that this is something that OEMs should throw in with every purchase. Apple’s MagSafe adapter for MacBooks can be shortened thanks to an included accessory.

This video explains it all:

You can pick up the short power cable from CyberGuys for $1.79.

How much do they charge for shipping? (I am too lazy to create an account to find out what the real cost is, because I somehow doubt that it’s $0.21 for s/h + tax.

Been making my own short cords for years. Mine are about 5 inches long. I hate those long cords.

@Oliver I just ordered ten and the total was $23 including tax and shipping. So yes, technically they’re slightly more than $2/each delivered.

The product looks useful but the video is 6-minute too long…… : )

@Xavier — but I don’t need/want ten :) How much is shipping for one? Never mind, I am sure I can find this at Fry’s, too.

@loyukfai — don’t see the point of a video, period. It’s a friggin’ short cord. I wouldn’t even need a photo for that.

@Oliver- I think it was $5 or so for Priority USPS shipping flat rate. Didn’t change when I switched cart from 1 to 10.

Hi everyone – I made the video, so I thought I should explain that it’s not a six minute video about a power cable, which would indeed be pretty stupid. Most of the video is talking about the other accessory, a Samsung USB-powered DVD burner, and I also talk about Windows 7 performance on the HP Mini 1000 a bit. Seems strange to me that some of you would slam my video without actually watching it. :-)

Jason, I did watch it, before I posted.

And I wondered from the start why the heck you’re talking about Windows 7 in a video about a power cable. : )

You have to consider the context of us watching it – Nowhere in the original post mentioned the other accessories.

    Cheers.

@loyufal and @Jason- my bad for not explaining the whole video,I was just excited about the short power cables being available for so cheap.

Jason’s videos are typically very thorough- keep up the great work!

Let’s move on… Shall we…? : ) I intended to make a little joke only. I didn’t think the video is of poor quality but, the context, that’s it.

$2 does sound cheap, when you consider it’s in the US (again, context…) I would expect such kind of accessories get marked up for 100-200% than the prices in the South East Asia.

Cheers and keep up the good work!
