Sam’s Club to Bundle Dell Tablets with Electronic Health Records System

Published

on

Wal-Mart is getting into the professional Tablet PC business. Dell Tablet PCs loaded with ClinicalWorks’ electronic health records system will be available at Sam’s Club starting this spring.

The New York Times put together a full article on the subject several days ago that details the plan. Wal-Mart will be selling the bundle at a deep discount, which will start at $25,000 for one user and $10,000 for each additional user. The setup and maintenance costs will be offset by $40,000-per physician incentives offered in the economic stimulus plan.

In the package, Dell is offering either a desktop or a tablet personal computer. Many physicians prefer tablet PCs because they more closely resemble their familiar paper notepads and make for easier communication with the patient, since the doctor is not behind a desktop screen.

The stimulus plan has $19 billion earmarked for digitizing health records.

Wal-Mart announced that it would market electronic record systems to small physician practices, a group that has not adopted these systems as widely as integrated payer and provider groups such as the Veterans Administration and Group Health.
This is not the first time Wal-Mart has provided a low-cost alternative in healthcare. Milliman principal and consulting actuary William Pollock recently published research about the market-changing success of Wal-Mart’s $4 generic prescription drug offering.
