BumpTop 1.0 Officially Released

Published

on

We’ve talked about BumpTop, the 3d desktop application, quite a bit here at GBM, most recently giving away a bunch of beta invites. Well, I just got word through Twitter that BumpTop 1.0 has gone gold and is now available to everyone for download. They’ve added a ton of features like themes, and social integration to Twitter and Facebook. They offer two versions: the free BumpTop and BumpTop Pro which costs $29.

FYI: As of this writing, their server is getting inundated with requests and is slow to respond.   Be patient and keep checking back. If you continue having trouble, the folks from BumpTop have passed me a direct link to the download files – have fun!

Check out the video below of the brand new BumpTop 1.0!

This is still far far to heavy to run on a “slow” tablet like my Dell XT. It might be okay to run on desktop machines, but i can’t ever imagin myself use an GUI that takes up 3%-60% of my CPU (it goes to 50+ when i move icons, or it updates a picture frame).

I like the idea, but i dont like the price you pay for it (and not talking dollars here).

    1. it’s a waste of CPU/GPU power and thus battery life
    2. It creates a mess on your desktop and isn’t the chaos on our real table enough?
    3. In the real life I have a large table and on top of this table I have things with which I work (sheets of paper, books, tablet, coffee, ..). On a PC I have a small screen which is filled out with the program I use at the moment. So I don’t have access to the desktop any longer. I don’t need and don’t want the desktop. All I need is the program which currently runs. But sometimes also need an access to other programs or files. So a software which can be placed on top of the current program, like Circle Dock, is a much better approach.

I like this software. For me with a XGA display it was always an issue to have enough space on the desktop, and so I thought about switching to SXGA. With this tool it is a lot better, and I the system resources a still fine til now.

It seems to come down to the old adage that no two people have the same usage patterns and needs when it comes to their computer. I keep a really minimalist desktop, and so room is not an issue for me. I am fascinated by the physics of this software, however. It’s just fun to play with. Will I adopt it for the long term? I doubt it, but I do love the playfulness of the design.

Seems pointless to me but hey, to each his own! :)
