Facebook App for Windows Mobile Now Available

Published

on

facebookwinmo Facebook is one of those applications that I’m on and off about. There’s a lot I like about it and a lot I don’t like. What I like is that I’m able to keep up with some friends from the various chapters in my life who I probably otherwise would not keep track off. The Facebook mobile app for the iPhone is probably one of the apps I use most often on that device. In fact in some ways I prefer that way of accessing Facebook over the normal web method. Now there’s a new Facebook App for Windows Mobile.

If you’re interested in checking it out what then Windows Mobile app is all about, Remo Knops of MobilityMinded has posted an overview of the app.

Well yeah, what’s not to like? You get access to all the actually useful Facebook content without all the fluff of the quizzes/apps/etc and without the ads (for now).

Is it just me, or do these mobile apps for websites miss the point of having websites? I mean, there’s no Facebook app for PCs, so why have separate dedicated apps for mobile devices? Why not just offer customized web interface instead?

For example, I like what you guys have done with the iPhone interface for GBM. It’s clean and streamlined. I bookmark the site directly instead of bookmarking the feed as I do with other blogs. I don’t see why major sites like Facebook don’t follow the same path. What’s the benefit of offering a dedicated app (and multiple ones at that) over offering a customized web interface?

What you can do is get rid of the address bar and the rest of the controls that the web browser needs. Increasing the amount of screen real estate you get with the program as apposed to the Mobile version of the website. Also they can make the interface even better. Example is now they can set actions for the softkeys in windows mobile – something a mobile website in a Browser cannot do.

My bad. It’s been so long since I used Windows Mobile, I’m completely out of touch with the limits of its software and most hardware.

iphone/ipod touch websites get rid of the address by when the user scrolls down.

You’d think MS would just add softkey support to the web browser. Even PSP and the Wii do it for flash and javascript.

So yes, mobile browsers CAN do it. IE just doesn’t.
