GBM Podcast #72: Is the Amazon Kindle Re-kindling Interest in Slate Tablet PCs?

podcastlogo44Amazon made big news this week with the release of its larger Kindle DX, and while we still have some unanswered questions about the device and the service, the news surrounding it spurred a good deal of thought about how this might impact Slate Tablet PCs. Xavier and Warner spend some time talking about the Kindle DX, Apple Media Pad rumors, Crunchpads and how they might affect the slate Tablet PC market.

We also discuss the Verizon MiFi 2200 broadband card, the release of Windows 7 RC, and some other geek news from this week, including Xavier doing some broadband tricks from a plane. No snakes though.

  1. Sara Fauzia says

The only two products that could possibly draw more attention to the slate tablet market is the larger iPod touch possibility and the Crunchpad, for one good reason: they both have touchscreens. As far as I am aware, Amazon’s Kindle (both the 2 and DX) have those wonderful e-ink screens, but not touchscreens. I feel that it’s the touchscreen devices that make people interested in other touchscreen devices, rather than the slate tablet form factor. I imagine people holding the Kindle to read are not imagining if their computer could look the same (and then do some Googling). We haven’t gotten past the need for the (physical) keyboard just yet.

The need for a physical keyboard is only on a full PC. UMPCs/MIDs/etc are not meant for the same usage patterns as a PC. I’ve had a slate UMPC for years, and it’s not very often that I’ve needed a keyboard. And when I do, I just pull out the $10 mini keyboard I bought off ebay

When that Kindle goes to color, make it better to access for those who are left handed, have a better coverage than the one they currently have(which I hear sucks)then, would I even consider for a moment one of those boys.
