The MID / Netbook vs Laptop – Mobile Minimalism

I picked up this great video from Twitter this morning on the Mini Cooper and its flexible / minimalistic approach compared to the big, powerful gas guzzlers out there. When I saw it, I immediately thought of how it applied to what we often write about on GBM and our approach to mobile computing, as well how it paints a great picture of the tablet pc / MID / Netbook vs huge Laptop debate. Mobile minimalism is good – it creates opportunity for flexibility, being light on our feet, quick to act, and clear thinking.

    if the engine needs to run high revs all the time because of the fuel, its not worth it…

    There is something to be learned from the Mini but its minimalism is not the minimalism of a netbook. The netbook, like the Yaris or the Fit, has a cost/price driven minimalism. The Mini is better compared to high performance UMPCs or tablets. These are not cheap machines, they are purpose built with no attempt to cut corners. My vision for the segment is even better expressed by the late Colin Chapman of Lotus Cars who once said his design philosophy was not to subtract but to “add lightness”.
