Two boxes full of Viliv S5s just showed up. I’m obviously going to review one, but the other six are going to be used for an exciting project. More coming soon….

I can’t say anything more about the project until early next month, but the GBM community will be the first to know.

In your review, if you can, please try blu-ray playback. I’ve read that it is supposed to be able to, and I’ve read some one played back a ripped version, but that to me is not the same thing as playing it off a disk.

I’ve had success with that on my Asus N10j, using this drive :

And was wondering if the Viliv S5 could do the same thing.

@LeeN, I do have an external Blu-ray drive. What software are you using for playback on your N10j?

Great little machine. I’m a pure tablet user, no keyboard or mouse at all anymore. I’d love to see how the haptic keyboard works, especially as compared to the excellent handwriting recognition I normally use (like right now). I tried to get one in both of Dymamism’s presale events, no luck in either.

I have a copy of PowerDVD 7 that I use on my systems. From what I have heard PowerDVD or it’s components were used in playing back ripped blu-ray movies.

I guess the only weird thing would be that you couldn’t hook up the Viliv S5 to a HDTV to test. From what I understand, blu-ray movie playback requires hdcp and either HDMI or DVI. Ripped blu-ray most likely doesn’t require that. I know nvidia supports hdcp, I would think if a device supports blu-ray decompression that it would also support hdcp. So it may just be a matter of having HDMI or DVI, but I haven’t heard of the Viliv S5 providing an adapter for those yet, and I am not sure if it would work through VGA.
