Windows 7 Launching October 22
Microsoft conformed that Windows 7 will start selling on October 22, which just happens to be my wife’s birthday. I don’t think she’d appreciate a gift-wrapped copy of Windows 7, but a lot of people probably have Windows 7 on their shopping lists.
In an interview with a CNET reporter, HP CTO Phil McKinney said the quality of the code is stellar. Microsoft also confirmed that copies of Windows 7 will be offered for free or at a discount to those who buy machines with Windows Vista close to the launch of the new OS.

October 22nd is my birthday too! (I’d appreciate a gift-wrapped copy of Windows 7 ;))
I wouldn’t buy a Vista machine to get 7 at 1/2 price, I would wait for the release and buy a 7 machine. Useless promotion.
Anyways, Windows 7 RC is free until next year… :)

It’s a bit late for my October 4th birthday but I would appreciate a gift-wrapped copy too!

@Darren,
The promotion is great for the back-to-school shoppers.

Will vista computer be cheaper right before release? If so it might be worth it, because if someone like me can handle installing windows 7 RC on a computer—well anyone can. So how about my question: are there usually cheaper prices on old operating system machines as the new ones come out? Or did the vista/xp happenings change all that?

Jim- this is going to be tough to predict. The manufacturers will probably have some inventory they’re going to need to clear out, but I don’t expect to see Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. offering significantly cheaper Vista machines
along side Windows 7 ones.
There will be significant holiday discounts as always that will probably negate discounts on Vista computers.
