Google Voice to Allow Number Porting

Published

googlevoicelogo Something I’m eagerly awaiting is for Google Voice to expand its Beta. Now I’m even more excited to get my hands on Google Voice. According to TechCrunch, Google Voice will allow number porting which means those concerned about acquiring yet another phone number to have Google Voice control over their other numbers can ease those concerns.

Word is this will roll out later this year. Here’s hoping the Beta opens up sooner than that.

Interesting…so, porting, as in if I wanted to ditch Vonage, I could keep my same phone number, and have Google host it?

Outbound calls is still an issue through. From the article…

“Outbound calls from those devices will still show whatever phone number is assigned to it, though. But Google has that covered, too. We’ve learned that they are preparing to launch apps for the major smartphone platforms that will automatically route outbound calls through Google Voice. That means whoever you call will see your Google Voice number as the caller.”

How will that “route outbound calls” thing work? Maybe through a Google-operated IP phone gateway (something like Skype)? Can one subscribe to a data plan *only*?

Will there be a future that mobile operators are merely connection providers like today’s ISP, whereas one can subscribe to any voice provider like today’s email service?

Oh… Looks like that there’s already something like that for BB and iPhone…

P.S. It doesn’t seem to be based on IP phone tech.
