Senators Ask FCC To Scrutinize Carrier Exclusivity

Published

on

The Rural Cellular Association along with several US Senators is asking the FCC to take a look at the practice of exclusivity agreements that carriers use to subsidize cell phones and other mobile gadgets. The Senators set on the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet and are planning to hold a hearing on Wednesday to examine whether or not exclusivity agreements unfairly restrict consumer choice and affect competition.

Those sounds you hear are lobbyists gearing up to prevent this from going anywhere.

    Hmm.

Not sure what to think about this… I mean, really, there’s only two phones on the market right now with exclusivity agreements that anyone really cares about… the iPhone and the Palm Pre… every other phone worth having (and umpteen zillion that aren’t) have similar or identical models on multiple carriers.

On the other hand, I don’t think the government ought to be regulating ANYTHING let alone whether or not two companies can enter into exclusive agreements. It’s Apple’s own fault that they locked themselves out of more sales.
