New PDF Markup / Annotation App Coming Soon From Evernote and Foxit Software

Published

on

Tablet PC users rejoice – there is a new PDF markup / annotation application coming to town and it is from Evernote and Foxit Software. I can’t share much beyond these screenshots, except to say that the PDF markup application supports context recogntion, which according to the folks at Evernote, should boost recognition for most Tablet PC users beyond the TIP and the regular version of ritePen.

Evernote is best known for their very popular notetaking application, Evernote, as well as their pen-based application ritePen. Foxit Software produces the very popular, and free, Foxit PDF Reader. It is good to see these two fine companies partner together to produce what looks to be a very exciting entry in to the PDF annotation space.

I will share more as I get more info from Evernote, and you can expect an InkShow once we get to put pen to screen on this puppy. Stay tuned!

Update: I just received two more screenshots from Evernote showing creating a PDF form and assigning recognition context to the fields. I can certainly see where this form-filling capability coupled with tablet pcs will be a boon for field force workers and the healthcare industry.

    Rob, I realize there’s only so much you can tell us. But I’m having trouble thinking of usage scenarios. It’s probably because, while I own PDF annotation software (Bluebeam & PDF Annotator), I really don’t use Evernote much, basically because (at least in the past) its lack of inking support. Could you help me out?

    Sounds like a great tool, essentially merging form input and free annotating. That said, I hope there’s some improvement to the RitePen text recognition/editing setup, since that’s what appears to be the building block of the form entry. I bought RitePen 3.1 when I got my tablet and absolutely could not get enough command over the gestures to consistently do what I wanted (delete often became a hyphen, etc). If the medical companies have been just using the TIP previously, switching to the RitePen recognition software for PDF entry could become too much of a hassle for widespread adoption.

    Genghis Khent – it will be a dedicated app, similar to PDF Annotator and Bluebeam – same usage scenarios (form filling, pdf markup, etc)

    @Tim,
    If you have the HP 2710p (maybe also applies to the 2730p), then it may be that particular model. I experienced problems with certain Ritepen 3.0 gestures and backspaces that were diagnosed to be most likely the driver or hardware. Those recognition problems didn’t happen with a Sony U750P UMPC.

    @Joe I was doing it with the T5010 and found that unless I got my backspaces perfectly horizontal from the exact right starting point, then I would end up with a hyphen. To say it’s a driver error sounds a bit off to me, since all the Wacom digitizers use the generic Wacom driver.

    @Tim,
    My most significant problem was also on backspaces, a reverse tail that got recognized as a dash rather than a backspace. They looked somewhat like this: /________

    I got very kind help from RitePen during last year’s 3.0 beta testing. None of the other beta testers had my problem, nor did I see it on the test movie they sent me when they were trying to duplicate my problem (I don’t know what hardware they used). Nor did I have the problem when using my passive touchscreen Sony U750P.

    Here is what RitePen said (the reference to 2.7 was because I didn’t notice the backspace problem on v2.7):

    “The previous version ritePen 2.7 had an error which affected other situations but occasionally helped your backspaces; once we’ve fixed it in 3.0, your backspaces started to suffer.

    The reason for tails is not quite clear to me: it could be a sub-conscious movement of your hand in the â€Ŕfast deletion mode”; but more likely, it is a driver problem (too â€Ŕsoft” writing is allowed; sometimes, it is customizable) or a hardware issue (ink collection continues for too long after the [electromagnetic] pen if lifted).”

    I never solved the problem on the 2710p, and now almost always use the TIP.

    I wish it had an interface similar to Artrage…would be fantastic for inking on a PDF!

    Judging from the images, this software doesn’t seem to become a great annotation software using a pen. If you look at the pictures you see that pen icon and next to it the eraser icon, which reminds me of adobe acrobat and its poor handwriting support. It seems there is no custom tool pallet for adding your own pens, which in my mind is essential for a annotation software on a tablet pc. Well, hope I’m wrong, because currently I’m not really satisfied with bluebeam pdf revu nor with pdf annotator.
