Pioneer announced a new lightweight DVD/CD burner that should make a good companion for netbook and notebook users who like to travel light. The Pioneer DVR-XD09 is the industry’s most compact external DVD burner, weighing in at eight ounces and is just a little bigger than a CD case.

The Pioneer DVR-XD09 has a single USB port for data and power. Standard DVDs can store up to 4.7GB. This new device supports dual-layer DVD-R discs for a maximum storage capacity of 8.5GB.

The DVR-XD09 supports up to 8x write speeds and 8x read speeds of DVDs. CDs can be burned or read at 24x speed.

The Pioneer DVR-XD09 will begin shipping in August with an MSRP of $79.99. Expect to see it slightly cheaper at retailers and online.

  1. Ah, I may have found the portable DVD player I need for my x61!

  2. Wow, that is impressively light, and surprisingly affordable. I remember looking for something like this when I got my x41 tablet a few years ago and something like this would have run more like $200.

  3. This only needs one USB plug to “burn” the CDs?

  4. Bought this product but will need to return them because as as soon as I tried playing a DVD, it tells me support for mpeg-2 is not available and that I need to upgrade the software that came with it. Price from 47 Euro. I expected the unit to come with a software that will allow me to play DVDs without buying additional software!
