My Wife Wants a New Phone. Recomendations Please.

Published

on

collageLooks like I’ll be phone shopping this weekend. My wife is ready for a new phone. She doesn’t want a smartphone, or anything approaching an iPhone. Here needs are simple, (although when we inventoried them last night they have changed a bit.) She wants

  • a phone she can make calls with,
  • BlueTooth for a headset (that’s actually my recommendation-she drives like crazy with a phone to her ear),
  • full QWERTY keyboard (she loves to text)
  • camera
  • be able to check her email.

Her carrier is Sprint and we’ll be staying with Sprint. Yes, she looked at the Palm Pre, but she doesn’t need or want everything that a smartphone has to offer. So, she’s shopping for a feature phone. Love to have your suggestions, since I’m a smartphone guy.

    I’d say a Pre or a Rant… but I haven’t used a Rant personally, so I don’t know how dependable they are.

if there are no dumb phones meeting her needs, she still *could* get a smart phone–she doesn’t need to use all the features, after all.

I assume she wants a simple calender? Doesn’t someone need to track the kids?

From your description they best phone you could get her, best for all the people who have to share the road with her, and want to actually talk to her without her texting them or answering her e-mail while they are talking, should be – that’s right you guessed it – NO PHONE AT ALLLLLLL. Tell her to try driving while she’s at the wheel.

I think Nokia E71 is more of a phone than anything else in the full-QWERTY market niche.

    Diamond- No. No KB
    Instinct- N0. No KB
Rant, reclaim or any other dumb phone- No. Prolly cannot check email.
Nokia E71- No I don’t think it’s available at Sprint If available, Maybe yes.
Pre- No KB is too small.
The best for her probably the BB Tour.

I would recommend the LG Lotus. It is carried by Sprint and is one of their most popular handsets. I have put my mother in one, as well as a female co-worker who came to me for advice. Both have been pleased and get frequent compliments on the phones. It does support email. There follow-up, the Lotus 2, in the works, and is due to hit in October, I believe. Hope this helps, even if it just provides another option to be considered or eliminated.

    Definitely iPhone.
The best thing for texting is iPhone. I have over 35000 messages in my iPhone and its not even getting slower. And its soft keyboard is also very nice when you accustom to it.

For checking emails again iPhone is very good.

Camera is not so good but it’s much better in 3GS.

You know you can connect bluetooth headset with iPhone since OS 3.0

You guys aren’t reading the requirements….she’s on Sprint so…no iPhone. She wants to make calls and text. That’s about it. She also needs Bluetooth and Qwerty. So I would check:

    The Reclaim
    The Rant
    The Rumor 2

    or any of the blackberries.

If she does try to go to a smartphone (changes her mind….women are like that) I would look at the Pre, The Centro (good for smartphone first timer), or the HTC Touch Pro.

    Hi Warner

What about things like i) battery life, ii) ability to hold onto a (weak)signal, iii) screen size, iv) overall size & weight, and v) form factor. These may be inportant considerations for your wife.

My mom recently got an LG Lotus and loves it. She checks her GMail on the phone and it just works, which is why she stayed away from a smartphone. It has a full qwerty keyboard in a relatively compact, clamshell form factor. All in all, she’s a pretty happy camper. =)

Without a doubt the Samsung Exclaim.

Good for calling, has a dual slider so makes calls easy, and texts equally well.

You can check e-mail and it has a pretty decent camera.

Comes in Raspberry or Blueberry- a little bit stylish.

One of Sprint’s better exclusives to come around in a while.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. She decided on a Samsung Exclaim. She seems happy, so we’ll see.

Just get her an iPhone and end the nonsense. She will be completely happy with it I can assure you.
