BumpTop Goes Multi-Touch

Published

on

BumpTop the 3D desktop UI that always looks exciting has added multi-touch. There are a range of touch controls that allow you to use multiple fingers to pinch, squeeze, rotate, toss, pan, zoom, and even crop photos. From the video this looks awesome. To take advantage of this you’ll need Windows 7. And of course we don’t have too many devices with capacitive digitizers to really put this in play at the moment, and I imagine the team behind BumpTop is awaiting those as much as we are.  Check out the video.

    Can you try it with the X200t?

    Have they made any speed improvments? Love it last time i played around with it, hated the fact that it took close to 50% CPU in use.

    @Amitai: as soon as I can get to it. Busy day today and tomorrow.

    @Elmstrom: I agree.

    It has nice ideas, however, I don’t think anyone who uses his computer for more than just social networks and image stuff will be more productive with it. It’s, maybe, a great UI for a mobile OS like Maemo but not for a PC.
    To be honest, I have a few widgets on my desktop and that’s it. The rest is in the easy to access taskbar/startmenu and 99% of the time I work with a program who needs the full display area.
    So, except of a few nice effects and shorter battery life, I don’t see a point in using it.

    As far as I can see it doesn’t help me to keep me organized better, it seems to make everything even worse. I know a lot of people who can live with such a mess, I not.

    However, it’s a great demonstration of a good multi-touch integration.

    Nice. Would be nice if you could set it to launch when in slate mode…then when you switch back to landscape it puts itself away and your regular desktop returns. Otherwise, I dunno.

    Yeah, I agree that it was pretty neat, and multitouch on it sounds cool, but it uses up way too much system resources. Not too big of a deal in some ways because I typically don’t use anything that stresses the system. Still, the increased resource usage kills my typically barely enough battery.

    this might be cool on a Surface.

    I’d love to see this integrated with an image editing/tagging application like Picasa.

    This is really cool, but as with many multitouch interfaces, it’s not yet seamless enough to be quicker or more useful than a mouse. Now, if it’s a giant screen on a wall, it’s perfect. PC’s, not so much. I noticed the tiniest bit of lag and having to remember which finger combinations to use to get the desired effect seems less natural than a touch interface should be.

    Still, very very cool stuff! I’m loving where multitouch is going!
