Microsoft Releases Bing App for iPhone

Published

on

photoMicrosoft has released, and Apple has approved, a Bing App for the iPhone. Yes, it is all about search and finding things, and at a quick first look, it is quite impressive. You can use voice to enter search data or type in what you’re looking for.  On the home screen you have six buttons that lead you to Images, Movies, Maps, Businesses, News, and Directions. The animations, especially with Maps is quite impressive.

Of course the application is using geo-location to pinpoint where you are and when appropriate deliver results close to you. For example if you start with Businesses, you then drill down to a series of categories (restaurants, shopping, nightlife, etc…). Choosing restaurants from there takes you to a selection menu that includes a variety of types of restaurants. Choose a type and you get to local restaurants of that type.

This is obviously going head to head with Google’s excellent Google Mobile app as the search wars continue unabated. And since Apple and Google seem to be taking shots at each other, I guess it is no surprise that Apple is content to let the Bing App take up some valuable screen real estate. This isn’t Microsoft’s first app on the iPhone. Previous Microsoft apps include SeaDragon and Tag Reader.

Below are some screen shots.

I’m not seeing those problems, Robin. Typed searches are working fine as is voice. That said, the results aren’t as good as Google’s, but I think that is Bing more than the app.

Im not seeing any of those issues. IME it works just like the winmo app if not better. I am glad to be able to have the voice integration into mapping, directions, getting traffic data, etc. Works great when AT A STOP LIGHT IN PARK of course.
