Neat Trick with the IdeaPad U1

Published

on

The IdeaPad U1 is probably the coolest notebook I’ve seen at CS 2010 so far. I got to spend some time playing with one away from the crowds at all the events and really liked this simple, but very useful trick that I demo in the demo below.

Let’s say you’re connected to your home’s WiFi network and have the U1 on your browsing at your desk or kitchen table. If you’re like me, you probably have several browser tabs open at once. If you decide to go mobile, all you have to do is detach the slate portion of the U1 and go. The device can switch automatically to its internal 3G connection and open all of your tabs in the lightweight browser that runs on Snapdragon. When you get back home you can slap the slate back into place and your browser tabs are automatically re-synched back  into Internet Explorer.

Will running apps on the notebook base stay running as you zoom off with the slate?
So… if I am waiting for windows to update, can I take my slate and go sit on the couch and watch youtube videos while the screenless notebook continues to chug along?
Or… OK… windows update might be a special case.
Will my torrent continue to download on the laptop part in the same scenario?

I was told that the base can work without the slate when hooked up to an external monitor.
