CES 2010: eReader orgy

Finishing my first full day on the show floor. One thing I need to get off my mind before I forget is the absurd number of companies making eReaders. Had to narrow down the choices to a select few.

I finally made it to the enTourage booth to check out their eDGe eReader hands-on and fully functional. Got some video (camera died for part of it) and photos, and even managed to spill some ink.

On the way there, I got lost in the Samsung domain. Have some cool things to show, but not eReaders. Stopped me from shooting. I will confirm, however, their touchscreens use an active digitizer, not Wacom penabled.

Next was the QUE, which was featured at Last Gadget Standing. Absolutely exquisite device. Felt light enough to blow out of my hand in a stiff breeze. Hopefully my video made it because it is beautiful. Premium device but apparently a premium price too.

The one I picked from the masses to check out is the jetBook. They’re going for the low cost approach and have an interesting design. Details to come for each.

    I’m just wondering why you chose to spend time with a Jetbook. Did they announce something new? Their existing products appear to be technology on par with five year old products like RocketBook. Is the reflective LCD screen that much better than transflective or other daylight readable LCDs?

    Last summer, I was using a Dell Axim X50v which I picked up used for about $100 as an ebook reader. With a 3.7″ VGA resolution transflective color LCD, I was able to read fairly comfortably on the beach.

    SAM, honestly it was more right place, right time than anything. They caught my eye with their low cost approach and a unique form factor. The jetBook certainly isn’t a Kindle killer but I think they serve a niche worth serving. I’ll explain in detail later.
