Hands on iPad Video Raises Questions

Published

on

The folks at SlashGear got some hands of video of the iPad. Worth a look.

I’m just going to say this after watching this. As someone who did not go to CES2010 and get to see the tsunami of Tablets there, watching this video I see fundamentally no real differences between what I viewed of some other Tablets at CES2010 and what I’m viewing here.

That said, Tablets are meant to be held in the hand and there is no discounting that experience. Additionally, we know about as much and about as little about all of these Tablets at the moment, other than that Apple is planning on shipping theirs in 6o days.

Warner – which upcoming slates do you think could be a good competitor to the ipad?

In fairness to the iPad, that video demo was absolute garbage. Like watching a chimp figure out suitcase. I get the sense no one at the event had any real-life experience with tablets.

Well, I’ve only been reading about the iPad (formerly known as “mythical apple tablet that will do everything and save the economies of every nation on earth”) for 10 minutes on various tech blogs, but I have to admit that I’m finding it amazingly underwhelming (particularly compared to the hype).

my biggest hope from the iPad launch is that, in an effort to compete, all the other tablets that I want will come down in price. especially the Viliv x70, and hopefully some even better ones soon to launch. Like Ive said, if I ca’t write on it, no tablet will find a place in my home.

It’s underwhelming compared to anything. It tries to fit between a laptop and a smart phone, but there’s nothing novel it can do. With a laptop and a smart phone I can replicate every function of the iPad, and more (flash, multitasking, camera, etc.).

Why doesn’t this thing do anything that a smart phone and a laptop can’t? Why no inking?

If it had an active digitizer OR was aimed at the Kindle with a similar buy and download ability with Barnes & Noble or Borders I might be interested. If I could buy all my text books and ink on them, I would really be interested. But to me, it just looks like a big iPhone without the phone or camera.

One thing I will say for this thing is that it’s surprisingly fast.

Its not different than the other tablets you viewed?

er ah.. did those other tablets have:

    1. 140,000+ apps at their immediate disposal?

    2. Function as eBook readers (half decently?)

    3. Have a reasonably mature OS in that form-factor? (sure clunker x86 tablets do exist)

I agree this first hardware rendition is a little bit underwhelming but they do need a path to upgrade from and rest assured they will.

But the one thing I’m sure about its quite different than the other tablets of this category… of which the HP Slate and Joo Joo don’t have the above factors.

I personally think the last 6 months has just been an unwitting crowd-sourcing exercise on Apple’s part who will now take all that info (wishes, desires, functionality) and build it into the upgrade paths of future iPads.

More about that here if it interestests you:
