Rumor: Amazon to Give Away Kindle to Prime Subscribers

Published

on

Amazon Kindle 2Well there’s one way to make sure you gadget gets into folks hands when you’re in a competitive war. Give it away. That’s the rumor floating around from TechCrunch. Essentially a source is saying that Amazon is considering giving all Amazon Prime subscribers a Kindle for free, although there are no details and the rumor contains a caveat that Amazon has to figure out a way to do this without losing money.

Amazon Prime subscribers pay $79 a year to get free two day shipping anytime and are considered Amazon’s best customers. With the iPad looming and Apple’s iBook plans being a big part of that,it is easy to see Amazon being this aggressive, but I’m not sure if it will be quite this aggressive.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them just move to a subscription service with free or deeply discounted hardware. That should handle the “make money” issue.

I’m an Amazon Prime subscriber, but don’t own a Kindle. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon (computers, cameras, my last TV, video games, movies, paper towels, Annie’s Macaroni & Cheese and gifts for relatives). Amazon’s never ‘rewarded’ me for any of these purchase and I rarely buy books. Give me a Kindle and I might read a little more.
If Amazon offered a Kindle w/ a renewal of Prime I’d go for it in a heart beat.

I’m a Prime subscriber too, because I love the 2-day shipping perk. I don’t really read a lot of books, but there are those in my family that would love a Kindle, so if this happens, I know who to give it to. :)

I’m prime too and think I get my money’s worth out of it. This would be extra incentive to renew.

But, I’ll believe it when it is in my hot little fist.

Amazon could have started the rumor to see how many people rush out and buy PRIME memberships in hopes of getting a Kindle. If they get enough memberships, they’ll probably go ahead and give ’em away. After all, people will have $79 invested in the company so they’ll likely spend more so they’ll get their money’s worth. They’ll also buy books for their new Kindle. If, on the other hand, people are skeptical (like me), then they’ll say, “It was just a rumor. We don’t know how it got started.” They keep any new PRIME subscriptions that they receive and don’t have to spend anything.
