FCC Providing Tools to Test Broadband Speeds

If you’ve ever thought you weren’t getting the broadband speeds your ISP or provider promised, you might want to try these tools that the FCC has just made available.

First up is a tool you can use on your laptop or desktop that tells you upload and download speeds along with measuring latency and jitter. You have to provide some info the FCC before you can run the test and the site alternates between testing via Ookla or MLAB.

There are also new apps for the iPhone and Android platforms that can measure the same basic statistics.

Of course there have been tools to measure this around for awhile. Speedtest.net is the one I use the most on both my iPhone (yes, there’s an app for that) and also on computers of all stripes.
