The sleeping (and lumbering) consumer electronics giant is getting ready to unveil some devices this year that it hopes keep it in play as the gadget world falls head over heels in love with [...]
The headline for this post leaves out a salient point in this discussion, and it also hits at another that affects all of us who love our mobile gadgets. The point left out is that what John Herlihy of Google is referring to is that most consumers will be using mobile gadgets to consume information [...]
I have spent quite a bit of time in my car lately, traveling back and forth to our state capital advocating on behalf of arts funding and also visiting my mother who is terminally ill. (For those who have asked, thank you for doing so. She is doing as well as can be expected at [...]
Via the Evernote Blogcast (and the update notice I saw last night), Evernote 3.5 for Windows has gotten an update that, in addition to the usual widespread improvements, offers options for where to send your screen clips and how to view your notes.

Word out of Engadget is the Acer Aspire Timeline 1820PT convertible tablet will be priced at 599 Euros. They’re guessing that means it’ll be priced at $599 in the States. Sounds about right, especially since one of our forum members, Elmstrom, already found it priced on Play.com for £599.99 recommended retail.
Finally, a search option on a modern mobile I can get excited about: Gesture Search on Android 2.0. Draw a letter on the screen and find anything on your Android phone that starts with that letter.
When the Notebooks.com/GBM.com team was at CES this year, we saw anything and everything relating to iPhone cases , cell phone skins and laptop cases and bags. You name the accessory, I probably saw it. One of my personal favorites is Gelaskins. For those not familiar, Gelaskins provides stunning protective skins for all types of devices from [...]
Been going back and forth on universal remotes for my media room, including iPhone solutions, but this RedEye mini from ThinkFlood could have them beat: an IR dongle for the iPhone headphone port, offering macros and touch control for only $49.
Are they cloning a killer crocodile? Building a computer assisted way to look fabulous on the runway? From the name, one might think this Microsoft Research project was a hybrid of both, but in fact, Project Gustav is an attempt at “immersive digital painting”. Looks fierce… and a little familiar.
Microsoft is showing off some pretty amazing technology at TechFest. Todd Bishop and others got a chance to take a look at what is being called the Translating Phone. It not only makes a transcription of your conversation that becomes searchable in Exchange, but it also translates in real time a voice conversation that you [...]
Yesterday we mentioned the great CeBit coverage from jkkmobile and Netbooknews.com. In checking out some of the videos from the show, this one from jkkmobile featuring the Hanvon Tablets caught my eye, because it is the first new wave Tablet I’ve heard about that might have a digitizer/stylus option for Inking. Hanvon is debuting two [...]
Asus took the wraps off of its eBook Reader called the Asus DR-900 at CeBit. Joining an increasingly crowded field, (with technology that might actually be yesterday’s news within a year or so) the DR-900 has a 9 inch display. The e-Ink device supports PDF, ePub and HTML formats on the 1024 x 768 res [...]
Apple is already in a legal patent dispute with Nokia and now it is opening up another tussle this time with HTC. The issue is over patents (20 of them) that Apple holds on the iPhone UI, underlying architecture, and hardware. The stakes are obviously high in the mobile wars and so are the legal [...]
Panasonic has refreshed their Toughbook Tablet PC line with the C1, which they claim is the world’s lightest 12.1″ convertible Tablet PC at 3.2 pounds, yet it remains tough enough to be called a “Toughbook”. On top of that, it packs an Intel Core i5 2.4GHz processor and optional multi-touch screen that works with gloved [...]
Carriers do not charge for the text messages. Customers will not be charged for the text messages, and the $10 donation will appear on their regular monthly bills. Its nice to see large corporations put aside the capitalistic need for money and do something that is just the right thing to do. With the recent earthquake [...]
Along with a Mobile Surface concept, Microsoft also has a different kind of touch experience that might make your skin crawl a bit. It’s called Skinput. Apparently touchable armbands worn on your bicep can pick up different touch inputs. Because of differences in bone density, tissue mass, and muscle makeup, unique acoustical signatures can be [...]
Mary Jo Foley is reporting that Microsoft is getting ready to show off a sort of mobile version of Microsoft Surface, that Microsoft is calling Mobile Surface. This is being shown at an employee-0nly Microsoft Research showcase, but some reporters have seen it in action. The idea is to hook up a mobile phone with [...]
The HP Elitebook 2740p looks almost exactly the same as its predecessors, but its multi-touch display and faster processors will make a lot of people smile. I got a chance to take a look at the 2740p and shot a quick video of the new tablet. The Elitebook 2740p will ship with a choice of [...]
Several of our mobile blogging colleagues are attending CeBit in Hanover, Germany and covering the mobile tech news from there. The team at Netbooknews.com is there as is jkkmobile and they’ve already put up some video coverage of devices like the GigaByte Touchnote T1000P and the HiVision Speedpad Android Tablet. There’s lots more coverage including [...]
Call it a rumor, call it just another analyst trying to stir the pot. Heck, you could even call it good marketing depending on how you look at it. Regardless, an analyst at Canaccord Adams is saying that they have word that a manufacturing bottleneck could delay or reduce the number of iPad’s available at [...]
Wacom has updated their Cintiq 21UX with 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity but not multi-touch control. Instead, the new tablet display sports a pair of touchpads on the back of the bezel, allowing for many of the same functions as multi-touch gestures. The “Touch Strips,” used in conjunction with the thumb-controlled bezel buttons, allow up [...]
With the news from MWC about the new Windows Phone 7 operating system, developers and vendors are making changes to their product line in preparation. The first major vendor to make a change, Skype, the free VOIP client. Users attempting to download the client, which was Skype’s first foray into mobility, are now greeted with [...]
Viliv has added an HID driver for Windows 7 to the S5 UMPC. The bottom line on this is that S5 users can now have much better Tablet PC functionality. The TIP won’t lag when it pops up, calibration might actually hold, the Tablet PC keyboard is the default instead of the Accessibility keyboard, and [...]
I think we all suspected that touch was coming to HP’s Elitebook 2740p Tablet PC, the successor to the popular 2730p. We were right. HP has juiced the processor and added capacitive touch to the 2740p and for those who think it looks very similar to its predecessor you’re also correct. HP has also made [...]
