Finding your lost Android phone with iTag

Published

on

With all the news of lost or stolen smartphones (yes I am looking at you Mr. Powell), the idea of having a piece of software loaded on them that could help locate the missing phone is a good idea.  And, what if it also was able to remotely delete all the data on the phone so it wouldnt fall into the wrong hands?

Well, for Android users, there is a software for you called iTag. iTag is a full suite of tools available to help folks track down their missing Android phone. Once you sign up for an iTag account and install the iTag application on your phone, you can locate your phone, shut your phone down, backup your phone’s contacts before locking it, force your phone to ring—overriding silent mode—and even see if the thief who grabbed the phone swapped out the phone number. It really is a great way to secure your phone, in case you accidently lose it.  Corporate users are already used to this type of software if they have phones issued to them by their company.  However, its nice to see a company trying to look after regular folks like you and me.

iTag is a free service and can be downloaded from the iTag web site.

I don’t know. Free security service? That raises an automatic red flag to me. I cannot determine from their website info what their angle is, i.e., how they intend to make money. Could be targeted ads or fees for commercial use. Or they could turn freemium once they attain critical user mass. I would keep an eye on that.
