Steve Jobs Tells Why Flash is Not His Cup of Tea

Published

on

Steve Jobs has written a long missive explaining his reasoning on why Flash isn’t going to be on the iPhone/iPad platform. He lays out some history and then some technical and business reasons why Apple has taken the stance it has taken.

Although it can be argued that this issue is quickly becoming one that is dead and soon to be buried, as many sites who want that iPhone/iPad traffic move to other methods of displaying video, the key take away for me is this quote:

We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

As far as I’m concerned the bottom line in this crazy fight is that Apple has called Adobe’s bluff and won. It probably took some guts and a few deep breaths to pull the trigger on the decision, but Jobs did. I’m in no position to say definitively whether it was a right or wrong move on Apple’s part only history will tell us that. But given that so many sites and services seem to be following Jobs’ lead here, I think that speaks volumes.

Apparently I need to take a few less breaths before pulling the trigger next time. Didn’t see your post when I started mine, and we wound up homing in on exactly the same section. Must be “great minds thinking alike.”

Breathing is always a good thing, but in this case I don’t think it matters. We should somehow figure out how to post both entries in Flash.

    Apple open? what a concept.

Why do I have to download quicktime to even view videos on apple website? Don’t remember any other website made me do that.

So Steve admits macs crash but its no fault of apple. One plugin like flash can completely crash a system. Seems like Macs are not good.
