Thumb typing on the iPad works great… if your hands are huge

Thumb typing on the iPad works great… if your hands are huge

Of the folks I’ve talked to about the iPad keyboard (Xavier and my wife), we’ve agreed using two thumbs to tap out messages is challenging in portrait mode and darn near impossible to landscape mode. But then I watched this video on LAPTOP Magazine and realized we just have small hands.

Ten minute impression of the iPad

Ten minute impression of the iPad

Sorry folks, I know many of you were expecting iPad hands-on impressions from Warner at this point. Sadly, he has been called away for family matters, so the first follow-up to his unboxing video will be my thoughts after handling one in the Apple Store for ten minutes.

Snag in our iPad coverage

Snag in our iPad coverage

First day coverage of the iPad at GBM has hit an unfortunate snag. As many of you know, Warner’s mother has been ill these past few months. Well, he just got a call from his sister to head over right away. He, of course, is en route as I write this.

OK, after a quick conversation with the UPS driver, I got down to the obligatory  unboxing the iPad and here’s the video for your perusal. As you can see there’s not much in the box beyond the iPad, the charger and sync cable. I’m in the process now of syncing things up and will have [...]

Gmail for Tablets (sort of)

Gmail for Tablets (sort of)

Not one to be left behind, Google is staying a step ahead by reformatting their Gmail and other interfaces for the iPad and tablet computers. Or so they say. Their screenshot of Gmail on an iPad looks pretty slick, but using it on my Tablet PC requires a bit of tweaking and isn’t so hot.

Common Sense Prevails: Microsoft Renames Windows Phone 7 Series to Windows Phone 7

Common Sense Prevails: Microsoft Renames Windows Phone 7 Series to Windows Phone 7

Will wonders never cease? Someone had Microsoft finally got some common sense flowing. Microsoft is dropping the series from Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series and its now simply Windows Phone 7. Of course that or Phone 7 is what most folks had taken to calling it anyway, so the naming nannies finally capitulated. Microsoft of [...]

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions- an E-reader for meIhaveask

I have been racking my brain over the idea of buying an e-reader for myself.  I am going overseas for 2 1/2 weeks via cruise ship and I dont relish the idea of bring books in my suitcase.  My suitcase may be on wheels, but its still heavy– and when you add books…Oy.  It also [...]

Traffic Stats Hint There is Still Room For Other Slates Out There

I was taking a look at our stats today and before you say it, yes this is somewhat anecdotal and depends on more than just who views what post. That said, while we’re seeing a spike in traffic due to all the iPad coverage, several posts of late about the HP Slate and links to [...]

The iPad: It Slices, It Dices, on Colbert Report

The iPad: It Slices, It Dices, on Colbert Report

The hits just keep on coming from comedians in every corner. Steve Colbert had his take on the iPad and Salsa. Yeah, salsa, and he proves you don’t need an app for that, but you probably need a good cleaning cloth. What’s funny is that he doesn’t have to use the cliche to make the [...]

David Letterman Does the iPad

David Letterman Does the iPad

Why do I think that David Letterman’s reactions to the iPad won’t be all that different from a lot of others. Funny stuff. “You’re not buying an unnecessary electronic device, you’re buying a family.” You need to watch the video to get the context. Via 9to5Mac

iPad Apps Go Live in App Store

Only a handful of reviewers have their hands on iPads, but Apple apparently has flipped the switch on the App Store for iPad apps, making them available for purchase. (the link takes you to iTunes.) Yes, prices are indeed higher, although you’ll see a few free apps and a few for $.99. I notice that [...]

Tegra Chip Problems Delay Future Tablets?

Tegra Chip Problems Delay Future Tablets?

I’m going to caveat this post by saying it is April Fools Day. That said, I don’t think this info qualifies as a prank, but I would qualify it as a rumor. According to SlashGear, there is word that NVidia is having some difficulty with its Tegra chipsets and this is going to force a [...]

A Tour Through Silicon Valley

My wife and I have been fortunate to visit my brother-in-law in Mountain View, California, this week. Part of the agreement my wife and I made while out this way was that we each had one full day to plan whatever events we wanted. I was not surprised when my wife decided that that we [...]

April Fools Around the Web

April Fools Around the Web

It is always a good idea to be skeptical on April Fools Day, especially on the web. We’ve avoided (so far) April Fools Day silliness hear at GBM, but the rest of the web has been having its usual love/hate relationship with silly pranks and elaborate mischief. Google, as usual led the way, among other [...]

iPad steals the show on Modern Family

Well, I guess it’s not really “stealing” if you dropped a whole lot of money on product placement, which I’m sure Apple did in order to make the iPad the center of attention on ABC’s Modern Family last night.
