Aigo Tablet Catches Some Interest
Aigo is getting some Ink (not digital) today over its N700 Tablet. The picture sure looks pretty and as we’re seeing with most Tablet/Slates, the specs promise quite a few features. It is scheduled to debut with Android 2.1 running on a 1.GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and also come equipped with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset. It boasts HDMI and USB ports, dual speakers, 1080p video playback, and 3D sound (a concept I’ve never understood).
A couple of other notes. Engadget is saying that this is probably a COMPAL NAZ-10 Tablet/Slate. They point to a video which if the claims are true says it might support 16 hours of video playback. Do note the screen resolution of 800 x 400. As James Kendrick points out in this post that brings back shuddering memories of UMPC land and the horrible screen resolution issues those devices offered.

My reaction to the picture is to wonder why such large margins are left around the screen. The iPhone has a few millimeters border, the iPad expands the margin much more, and the Aigo margins look huge.
People have to treat these devices as ones meant to fit in a pocket, whether in pants or a jacket. Otherwise who will want to carry it around?
The iPad fits more or less into my sport jacket pocket (it sticks out the top a bit), but it wastes a fair amount of space as margin around the screen and won’t fit pockets of anyone else I’m aware of except Stephen Colbert.

This unit has a 7″‘ screen vs the larger 9.7″ screen on teh iPad.

The bezel area is necessary for speakers and port placement, but the big issue is handling. The iPhone or other handheld has narrow side bezels because it can be easily gripped by the sides without touching the screen. Gripping a tablet one-handed typically requires pressing with your thumb and fingers against the front and back, respectively. Similar is true if you carry one under your arm, holding it by one side. Without the bezel, you’d be contacting the touchscreen with your holding hand with annoying frequency.

I agree. Once you get past iPhone size, you neeed somthing to grip. From a practicle view, the grip area is probably the same for a 7″, and 10″ slate. Maybe alittle larger for a larger slate.

My Motion LS800 tablet has ~1 inch margins, and I think those are excessive. I hold the computer with my hand in an L-shape, with my fingers hardly curving around the front at all. That would be even easier on the iPad, which weighs about 1/3 less than the LS800.
