Do Your Gadgets Mess With Your Sleep Pattern?

Published

on

Today CNN ran an article about how all of our gadgets can interfere with a good night’s rest. The article profiled restless guy that tried turning off all of his gadgets and lights at sundown. It apparently worked and he had a lot more zip in his morning step since he was able to fall asleep a few hours earlier.

Some doctors recommend turning off your TV and electronic devices well before bedtime. I’m probably a poster child for bad sleep hygiene. I often use my iPad, tablet or notebook immediately before going to sleep. A couple of months ago I mounted my TouchSmart all-in-one on the wall next to my bed so we could watch movies before going to sleep. I had to adjust its backup schedule after it woke my wife and I up a few times as my Windows Home Server woke up the machine to back it up at 2am.

How about you? Do you have any gadgets keeping your eyes open longer than you’d like?

My Dell Latitude E6400 laptop sleeps on the dresser next to my bed along with my Touch Pro 2 and my Zune HD. In fact, the Zune is connected to a dock and serves as my alarm clock.

On rare occasions, my laptop has woken up unexpectedly and nearly blinded me, but mostly it sit silently sleeping. The phone sleeps quietly most of the time as well, but I can’t leave it since I have on a few occasions been woken up by the night shift nurse staff for the hospital I work for if a system isn’t working right. The Zune also sleeps comfortably in its dock and wakes me up gently with a gradual volume increase in the mornings so not to startle me. :)

I am able to sleep with or without the gadgets nearby just fine, but I do recognize that my sleep habits aren’t what they ought to be since I usually go to bed around midnight and am back up at 6am.

Lately, I’ve been falling asleep with either my new little Sansa Fuze or my Dell XT, listening to or reading a book in bed. The Sansa is supposed to shut itself down after 15 minutes of inactivity, but evidently, a book playing is activity whether I have touched the wheel or not. So I will waken in the middle of the night sometimes, in the middle of the book, and feel compelled to go back to the last place I remember, and listen for a while. Not the best thing to have happen at 3 a.m.

Up until 2 years ago, when my spouse had knee replacement surgery and spent six weeks recovering, we had a no electronics bedroom. Now he watches TV in the bedroom all the time. My book is my attempt to avoid reruns I can’t take anymore.

I wake up with the sun, and I wish I could fall asleep more easily these days. SIGH!
