HP Data Vault Contest starts today

Remember back in April when I mentioned a little contest we were going to hold giving away a new HP Data Vault x510?  Well, our time has come!  You all had your chance with these other participating sites, but they left the best for last:

Starting today, GBM readers can have the chance to win a brand new HP Data Vault x510.

What do you have to do to win? Its simple.  Leave us a comment in this post or in our forum telling us why you want the device and how you’d use it. Easy huh?

By the way, not only is there an HP Data Vault up for grabs, but entrants who have a more creative take on how they would use a HP Data Vault  will be entered into a second drawing for a chance to win an HP Mini 311 (first place), Smart Wi-Fi Display (second place), or an HP T-Shirt (third place). This contest can be entered by each person once, but note that you are not only competing against GBM readers but other websites who are also giving away the Data Vault too for the creative based prizes.  Not too shabby huh?

Winners will be chosen for the HP Data Vault x510 on May 30 using random.org. Winners for the secondary prizes will be announced later on in June.

Good luck to everyone!  We can’t wait to see how you would use an HP Data Vault!

I photograph competitive gymnastics (club) and average 2,000 – 3,000 photos during a meet. I give the photos to the gymnasts but am running out of space for my archives. This would serve a wonderful need.

  2. Fred Beiderbecke says

I would use it to store media and to backup up the machines around the house.

  3. Jeremy Jones says

The usual uses would be to store digital media. I’m interested in the HP MediaSmart for its ease of use and energy efficiency. I have a custom built Windows Home Server but it requires more work to operate and uses about 4 times the amount of power using an old P4 processor. The MediaSmart Server is a set it and forget it server and that’s what I want with my backups and streaming.

  4. james says

I would use the HP Data Vault X510 for setting up a home network of up to 5 pcs for the following storage and sharing purposes:-

    1) Backing up all my important documents, family photos and videos or whole drive

    2) Media streaming for sharing via wifi network for playback of videos, music and pictures from network DVD and media players

    3) Web access and transfer

    4) Storage

    5) Network printing

A creative use for the HP Data Vault X510 would be to set it up as Web cam server to remotely monitor my parents house so that i can check in with them and make sure they’re ok.

    Thank you.

  5. Annette D says

I would use it to back up my important documents, photos (we have thousands!)music, etc. I have two sons ages 21 and 17 who would love to be able to back up all their important school projects and papers. Thanks for the chance!

As sung to the instrumental version of U2’s classic hit “One” … Maestro – Music please:

    It’s not getting better
    This data problem isn’t tame
I can’t take this problem now
    I’ve got something to blame
    I say …

    One copy
    One drive
    When it’s one version
    In my life
    One copy
    Can’t share it
    Leaves me crazy
    I care for it

    Did it disappoint me
Leaving my data state in doubt
I act like I don’t care for you
I can’t access you when I am out
    Well it’s …

    Not too late
    Today
To get a server into my life
All in one, and yet so simple
    I get to
    Share my data
    Save my data
    Vault …

I come to you for salvation
You come to save my day
I come to you for automation
For the data in my place

    Did I ask to much
    More than a lot
    You gave me a server
    That what I got
    All in one
    In one simple place
    Well I
    Share all over
And I copy it all again
    I say
    Data is my baby
    Data is right here
    Data is my baby
    Lost data is no fear
I ask you to share it
And that is no problem at all
And I can keep growing on
    Into what you got
When all I need is space

    One place
    One device
    One look
You got all the space that you need
    One life
    With each other
    Sisters
    Brothers
    One vault
And it is all so sane
    We get to
    Share with each other
    Share with each other

    One … vault

    Vault

Thank you and good night … I hope I win!!!!!!

  7. Cecilia Borges says

I would love to have this so my husband can store pictures of our family.

  8. tivoboy says

oh man, this is aWESOME!! I would love a unit like this, I’d use it to host pictures, videos (streaming them to my ipad with airvideo) and to enable a remote VPN for when I am outside the homeLAN for safety. As well as a universal backup for the myriad of systems I have in the house.!!!

  9. Tony says

For backing up pictures from my SLR and streaming videos to my PS3 and computers in my network =)!

  10. y v sai madhav says

I would love to have the HP Data Vault since being an NAS device, it gives me and the rest of the family the options to go through the photos and music to the different rooms over the home network. With the RAID, I no longer need to worry over the data and if anything ever goes wrong, I can recover them easily.

  11. Dave says

I need a NAS. I built a windows Home server, but it does not always meet my needs and runs hot. I need a dedicated device for storing files that is small and compact.

  12. lawdogrg says

At any given time, my family has more computers running in the house than we have people. I need it for backup and, most importantly, as a central filing location.

  13. sgs says

If I were lucky enough to be the winner, I would use this Data Vault as the central family storage unit (three college students in the family) for all academic work, all media, photos, business documents, etc.

  14. Kevin Murphy says

This would replace my 1st generation HP media smart home server which has served me well for several years now (early adopter). It handles my backups of my computers at home. It houses my years and years of pictures. All the data on it gets backed up to an internet datacenter using a third-party pluggin. More recently, it acts as an FTP server bringing in picutres from my new eye-fi card almost as soon as they are taken.

I love my HP home server!

  15. jaxim says

I want this to use as an easy to back up my many home computers. I’d especially like to use it as a media hub. Plus there are so many home server plugins.

  16. Andrew says

I want to use the Data Vault to back up all the computers at home regularly, and to store all the media we have in one place, so anything can be easily found if it’s not on a particular computer.

  17. Alex Borges says

I want my brother to win it with his U2 song but if I win it, EVEN BETTER!!!! I will just back up all his stuff on my Data Vault and hold it ransom!

  18. Luis S. says

how about getting it all started with a Data Vault.

  19. Dean says

    I would use it for:
    – media streaming
    – web access
    – document/data backup
    – network printing

  20. joe says

I would put my fingerprints all over the nice shiny case……

All kidding aside, I really need this HP Data Vault or some other solution for storing my data because I’m up to my ears in portable hard drives. If I happened to win, I promise to donate all of my external hard drives!!!! I must have about 10 of them.

I had a LaCie NAS that I used as a media server, but it crapped out. So, in addition to using the vault to backup all my home and office computers, I also promise to use the device to stream media to all of my neighbors.

  21. Mike says

I have set these up for three other people and I would love to have one. Simple….

  22. M@rc says

I’m working in a lab and we’re doing research to find a cure to multiple sclerosis, it’s a debilitating disease that targets mostly young women. My lab is focusing on the immunology side of it and we have tons of data that accumulate each days (pictures from microscopes, live imaging and videos from living brain cells culture, etc.). My lab could definitely use the HP vault to backup all our data and permit access to everybody in the building.

  23. Jean D. says

We have five computers in use here, and a data storage unit would be DREAMY. I’d use it to store mega amounts of classroom materials (I’m a teacher), family photos, personal writings, music, videos, and anything that walks or crawls.

    Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  24. TateJ says

If I had a new HP Data Vault x510.

I currently have an HP Mediasmart EX-470 and it is the hub of my home network. In addition to backing up all 6 of the Windows Computers in my house, it also acts as the media hub for me, my family, my extended family and friends. Here’s how:

First the usual centralization of Photos, Music and Video. All computers are set to automatically store photos and video to the home server. To do this, we have set up synch software to automatically synch specific folders to the home server. I have set up a “personal stuff folder” and a “public stuff folder” on my wife’s computer and my computer. Within each of these public and private folders, there are subfolders for pictures, video, documents and misc. Anything placed in a personal stuff folder is synched to a private folder within a user account on the server. If it’s placed in the public folder, it gets synched to the public share on the directory. IT took me a while to get my wife to buy into this scheme, but she is now behind it because she can”find stuff now” All music gets synched to the iTunes server on the Home server. All music is available to all network users. We each set up our own play lists on our individual computers.

One of my hobbies (aside from maintaining my home network) is photography. MY point and shoot camera has an EyeFi card in it. I take pictures and store them on the EyeFi. When I go to one of several public wifi hotspots that I use, my pictures are automatically uploaded to the internet and download to my home server into a directory on my home server. When I get home, I double check that they made it, sort them into a private share or a public share. All photos are duplicated within the server and on an external hardrive. I have a separate account set up for pictures of my son’s sports team. This folder is accessible remotely to the parents of team members and our family and friends.

I have a similar set up for video, but I limit the access due to bandwidth issues. I used to have my video open to all my friends, but my server was getting hammered with requests to look at my son’s baseball and basketball team videos.

I also have a separate account that I use just for work. Instead of thumb drives and big fat emails, I just upload the work files I need to my home server and I am set.

The final thing that my home server does is connect to the server at my wife’s medical practice and download the backups on the server and the data file from her Electronic Medical Records software.

As you can see, I am making great use if my HP Windows Home Server. But sometimes they poor thing starts to huff and puff. Its getting a litter old and the little Sempron processers has a hard time every so often. Saturday nights are really bad, because that’s when the wife’s emr records and office backups are downloaded. I’ve had to remove all add-ons except for the MacAfee Antivirus.

I could really use the HP Data Vault. It’s got the updated hardware that I need to make my home network run a lot smoother. If I was to win the HP data smart server, I would transfer all of my data and accounts over to it and pass my Media Smart EX-470 onto my mother and sister. Of course, I’ll have to be their network administrator. I haven’t decided if I will administer it remotely or not.

I posted the comment earlier today but id didn’t come. nways. So i am posting the comment again.
I am an IT professional girl . I have experienced some horrible incident of data loss on which i lost my some data including family videos and photos. So i truly understand the importance of back up. I have 3 pc at my home (1 desktop and 2 laptop). Since i use them equally so most of the time i don’t remember where i copied my important data and files. HP Data vault is an awesome solution of back up. Since it can be used with 1-10 pc wireless so i want to use it for my primary backup purpose. I will use this HP Data vault for
    1) Taking backup of my family videos and photos
    2) Taking backup of my all songs / mp3 collection.
    3) Taking backup of my all digital movie collection.
    4) back up of my all important files, documents etc.
    5) will create the image of my all costly software like Adobe photoshop CS4, window 7, visual studio etc and will put as backup on HP Data vault.
    6) will also store the product keys of all purchased software..

  26. Dan Jensen says

A Data Vault would be nice as both external hd and backup server for my laptop, which has a fairly small SSD.

  27. Thomas says

I’d love it so that I can finally have a base to finally stop having to worry about carrying around my portable devices! I think my girlfriend would go insane too with all the home server, media server trials I would be running with it too! :D

  28. Carmen says

I would love to have this for my pictures and to have for storing my extra data.

  29. William says

This would be so great to store media but particularly precious family photos. I’ve found some really old family photos that i’ve started scanning & sharing with family around the world…could use the archive space. Plus other digital media would help fill the vault!

  30. Chang says

Winning this would be a godsend to me. I have always wanted to have a system in place where I can share personal data with my family. However, due to our current financial situation, we could not afford one. “Cross my finger”

  31. Meena says

Well I’ve ben running out of hard disk drives to store data and even the biggest of them get filled up fast.

So, I’d like to use it as a back up and supplement to all my internal and external hard drives ( not counting the pen drives).

Also, for quite some time I have been thinking of creating a website of my own and this would definitely go a long way in solving that.

    Thanks for this wonderful giveaway.
