Panasonic announced an update for their Toughbook 19 (which sports a 10″ screen, not 19″). It now features an Intel Core i5-540UM processor with Turbo Boost for speeds up to 2.0GHz and vPro for motherboard-level security. It also tops MIL-STD-810G certification with the ability to withstand a six-foot drop (probably still won’t pass helicopter test).

The Los Angeles Times reports that the U.S. government is dropping eight billion dollars to upgrade and improve our GPS satellite system. While the price tag might get the goat of those who decry wasteful government spending, one look at how much our modern economy relies on GPS and $8B looks like a bargain.

The touchscreen all-in-one market continues to heat up. ASUS is bringing up the low-end with their EeeTop PC ET2010 series available with a dual core processor/graphics combo of either AMD Athlon II X2 / ATI Radeon or Intel Atom / NVIDIA Ion.

DigiTimes is reporting that HP Taiwan VP Monty Wong is confirming what most suspect, that HP will indeed bring WebOS to a slate. The report says we’ll see this at the end of HP’s fiscal year which is October. According to the report HP won’t be bringing WebOS to netbooks and we’ll hear more after [...]

This week is the Netbook Summit, where lots of folks with an interest in Netbooks will gather and talk about, well, Netbooks. I think that’s the agenda. But I’m guessing Tablets and Slates will be on their mind as well, seeing as some folks think that the iPad is the beginning of the end of [...]

Location, location, location. Turns out Amazon is working with notebook/netbook maker Asus to have its Kindle App pre-installed on some Asus models. Users could certainly install the app themselves and have had that capability for some time now. While some may view the icon showing up on the desktop as CRAPWARE, I’m sure it will [...]

Remember back in April when I mentioned a little contest we were going to hold giving away a new HP Data Vault x510? Well, our time has come! You all had your chance with these other participating sites, but they left the best for last: Neowin -April 11- 18 Jake’s MediaBlab -Apr 18-25 Hardwaresphere -Apr 25- May [...]

Thinking about ways Microsoft can turn things around after getting mostly snubbed in the Google TV comparisons, despite offering a more powerful media option, I’ve come up with a few suggestions based on my own experience, starting first and foremost with touch control.

FastMac’s USB power wall outlet, first spotted in December, has been officially christened the U-Socket and, after running the hurdles of certification, sports a new design, USB 3.0 compatibility, and an output boost that makes it iPad-friendly.

About a week ago, AT&T announced their intent to increase their 3G speeds via HSPA+, potentially boosting it to up to 14.4Mbps. That’s all well and good, really. But I have to wonder, AT&T, if your 3G speeds can get that high, why do your Wi-Fi speeds seem so low?

As promised, Hector Gomez put up a video of Inking on the iPad with Penultimate. Here it is. Thanks to Hector for doing this. Like I said in my earlier post it is all about the timing of how the stylus and hour hand interact with the screen.

Last we visited, I was questioning where Netbooks fit in my mobile life. Since that time I’ve traveled with a variety of Netbook hardware, (brief comments on each below), the iPad arrived on the scene, and I continue to love my Motion J3400. Before all of the questions of where each of these approaches to [...]

AT&T sent a letter to its “Valued Customers” letting them know that beginning June 1 it is going to up its Early Termination Fee (ETF) from $175 to $325. For those who don’t know ETF’s are what carriers charge a customer who wants to end a two-year commitment early based on the fact that when [...]

Uh, oh. Methinks that I will be taking rehearsal notes in Digital Ink for my next show on the iPad after all. Inkers who have been hoping for some iPad app that makes Inking possible the way Tablet PC users are used to doing so have largely been disappointed so far. There have been some [...]

Google is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man by not only patterning today’s Google Doodle after the game maze, but also making the Doodle a playable game. If that’s not crazy enough, it’s playable on handhelds using swipe control!

Google landed some big hits against Apple yesterday at their I/O developer conference. Reading through the narrative coverage, you’d think they were the only two companies that matter, which leads me to ask, whatever happened to Microsoft?

The Google I/O conference was destined to be full of news and it was/is. Google TV, the next version of the Android OS-Froyo, web based music, an app store for web apps, a new video codec for HTML5-VM8, and other things Google is promising for the future. And while the ongoing spats between Google and [...]

Yesterday a friend told me that she and her friends thought it was really cool that the Sex and the City girls were going to be using iPads in Sex and the City 2. . She told me to keep an eye out for the Sex and the City 2 ads that showed Sarah Jessica [...]

Google is making a play at Apple’s stronghold. Not the iPod, nor the iPhone or iPad, but iTunes. Music purchasing is coming to Android Marketplace, and it’s being backed up with seamless ways to sync and stream from your PC. And they’re making it even easier to buy and install apps.

MSI is showing off a new concept device called the “SketchBook” at an event in Amsterdam. It’s not quite a tablet. Instead, it has a swiveling base that can flip between the keyboard and a pen tablet. No details yet, but the idea is interesting and certainly I can’t fault them for wanting to pursue [...]

Not sure whether to classify this as a more powerful convertible netbook or a touch-only convertible Tablet PC. Regardless, Acer has officially announced a new convertible with 11.6″ 1366×768 multi-touch display, Intel Core 2 duo processor, HDMI-out, and up to eight hours of battery life.

Google I/O is the place to be for all things Android today. At the developer conference keynote, Google detailed the key features of Android 2.2 Froyo, which include Adobe Flash 10.1 support, a faster web browser, tethering and mobile hotspot support, and storing apps on external cards.

There’s a lot to like about the Sprint Evo 4G and I’ve had a few friends tell me that they’re going to buy the device. It runs on Sprint’s speedy next-gen network, can act as a hotspot and runs on Google’s Android operating system. But, Walt Mossberg from the WSJ reviewed the phone over the [...]

Two days after news came out that a woman who scrimped and saved to buy an iPad was turned down because Apple wouldn’t accept cash, the policy has been amended and on top of that, Mrs. Campbell, who pleaded for Steve Jobs to “give a sister a break” was given an iPad for free… not [...]

Google’s I/O Conference was sure to bring news and it did on a number of fronts. One of those was a curious preview of what Google is calling the Chrome Web Store. It’s a curious announcement in some respects because the apps Google is talking about offering are web apps. Apparently the Chrome Web Store [...]

We’ve blogged about down under Tableteer and former GBM Team member Hugo Ortega’s adventure into bringing a Tablet to market earlier. Now it looks like the debut of the Tega Tablet is just around the corner, coming at CeBit Australia on May 24 to May 26. The Tega Tablet promises both touch and pen interaction, [...]

Our friends from Netbooknews.com just published a video of a prototype slate Android device. It’s apparently an NVIDIA reference design that utilizes second generation Tegra graphics. As you can guess, this 8.9″ slate falls into the content consumption device category. NVIDIA is showing off the device playing Backbreaker, a football game, at Google I/O.

Gateway announced today they’re bringing down the price and raising the specs on their high-end all-in-one, so if you’ve been eyeing the One ZX series with multi-touch displays for your home entertainment PC, now could be the time to buy.

Donning the tights of Captain Obvious, Google co-founder Larry Page at Google Zeitgeist in the UK answered a question about poor battery life on Android devices by noting if you aren’t getting through the day “there is something wrong.” Yes, because people ask questions like that when nothing is wrong.

In their 2Q earnings call last night, HP CEO Mark Hurd announced their intention to take webOS “beyond smart phones into form factors such as slates and web-connected printers“, reaching the outside world via Twitter. Great that they’ve affirmed their commitment to a slate, but the printer comment has raised eyebrows. I’m not sure why.

Motion Computing is releasing updates to its vaunted slate line of computers the F5 and C5. Both now sport options for I5 and I7 processors and other advances. These rugged beauties descend from Motion’s work in the medical niche with the original C5. When the F5 made its debut it was targeted at folks who [...]

Motion Computing’s F5V Slate Tablet PC makes me wish I had a larger bank account. This rugged Slate Tablet PC, with its distinctive handle, is a great mobile note taking tool and I could easily see myself using it in my theatre work. It’s rugged, conforming to MIL-STD-810G and IP-54 standards. Running Windows 7 Professional, [...]

Vietnamese site Tinh Tế has photos and video of an unreleased iPod touch sporting a 2MP camera on the back. Labeling indicates it’s a design verification test unit. But is it the next iPod touch or the rumored iPod touch with camera that was expected but not released last year?

As Warner pointed out a few weeks ago, iPhone users are still unable to tether their notebooks here in the U.S. If the latest version of the iPhone 4.0 Beta is any indication, AT&T customers may be able to use their iPhones as a mobile 3G modem when the new OS and new iPhone launch [...]

Gizmodo, I guess in need of attention, has horribly distorted the meaning of words spoken by Bill Gates and Steve Jobs at All Things Digital in 2007 on stage with Walt Mossberg with their headline, “Bill Gates Told Steve Jobs About the iPad in 2007.” Only problem is Gates was talking about the Tablet PC, [...]
