Apple Releasing Multi-Touch TrackPad with Handwriting Recognition?

Published

on

Apple’s WWDC kicks off today in San Francisco and of course all sorts of rumors abound. One of them from Engadget this morning points to a “magic trackpad” that connects to a desktop or laptop via Bluetooth and brings all the multi-touch functionality we see on iPhones and iPads. It also supposedly offers handwriting recognition. I guess we’ll know in a few hours if this is real or not.

Their Bamboo tablet is available with touch, pen or both, but there’s no Bluetooth version.

Didn’t they release a new Bluetooth-based tablet recently?

…Wait. Intuos4. That means excellent pen support, but no finger touch at all. Furthermore, the BT version only comes in medium size.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure I saw handwriting recognition shown off at WWDC on MacBook trackpads before. Whether it ties into the existing Inkwell handwriting recognition system (that only appears if a Wacom tablet is connected and the drivers installed) or not, I don’t know.

More importantly, though-does Jobs really expect us to handwrite with our fingertips? I doubt that it has an EMR pen digitizer like Wacom’s pen+touch Bamboo models.

Yep, the replacement to their BT Graphire (which I have).

Regarding handwriting recognition, it should be noted that Macbooks already support this for Japanese and Chinese characters (probably others), and the leak is from a Chinese website, so don’t hold your breath for English hwr or anything else new.

    1. Is there an app and/or another add-on gadget that will let me hand-write on ipad and convert to typed face ? I pad would have really been terrific if it could have allowed that, as it’s size allows portability, but really need to be able to allow quick handwriting to send emails, note-taking, etc, etc.
    2. Is there a PC-based Tablet and/or a Convertible that is super light, about the size of iPad or smaller that has terrific hand-writing recognition that converts to typed face….w/ all the advantages of a PC w/ filing capabilities, etc, etc for a busy business user ?

    Thanks.

I’m glad Apple finally got around to inventing hanwriting recognition. How long do you think it will take to get stolen by MS?

Seriously, will this use a pen or stylus for handwriting input or just touch?
