Compass Mobile Stand for iPad

One of the benefits of blogging about mobile gadgets is your family and friends know how to shop for you on holidays and birthdays. One of the detriments is that they mostly don’t know what to purchase when you are always trying out new gear. That then turns into a benefit when they provide you with gift cards and say you figure it out.

After a busy month at the theatre, I am on a brief two day trip to visit my ailing mother after not being able to see her for some time. (For those who ask, she’s still remarkably hanging in there confounding doctors and insurance companies.)

After visiting her last night I decided to stop by the Apple Store and use that gift card that was burning a hole in my pocket. It was one of those, I don’t really need anything trips, just checking out what I might find. Intriguingly I stumbled on the Compass Mobile Stand for the iPad. I say intriguingly as I’d never heard of it before, and this morning I can’t even find a listing for it on the manufacturer’s website (Twelve South.) As I watch 3 of these fly off the shelves, I decided to pick one up ($39.95.)

It is an attractive stand that folds up quite compactly, looking very much like a compass (the drafting or nautical kind, not the directional kind.) It comes with a nice little case to carry it in. The surfaces where the iPad touches the stand all are rubberized so that you won’t risk scratching up the iPad. You can use it as a triangular display stand with the iPad in either landscape or portrait mode, or flip out a little rubber foot and using it as a typing surface. I was concerned that the rubber feet on the bottom of the display might interfere with typing as they do stick up a bit, but they don’t in my testing.

What’s also nice about the Compass is that you can keep your iPad in a slim case (like the Apple case or some other models) and all works well. One drawback that I noticed, due to the rubber feet and surfaces, if you try to slide the stand with the iPad on it, the Compass tends to try and fold itself up, so you might want to be careful there.

All in all, it was an interesting impulse buy with some birthday loot (the birthday was Sunday), and I find it interesting that we haven’t heard more about the Compass.

I bought one from E-bay for my iPad, hoping to carry it with the iPad in a small case. It is heavy and fairly bulky to carry, so I just left it home. It is a great iPad, or even notebook stand. Very heavy duty. I would like to sell it so if somebody wants to offer me $30 I would take that.

Congrats and thanks to GottaBeMobile.com for being the very first site to review Compass. We have now ‘officially’ released our new Compass Mobile Stand for iPad at twelvesouth.com. Regarding the little plastic ‘Crickets’ – the two products are night and day. Compass was designed specifically for iPad and it shows – from iPad optimized angles to specifically placed silicone padding – not to mention one is plastic and one is iPad matching metal. Hope this helps.
