Windows Phone 7 UI demo makes iPhone look like a dinosaur

Published

on

That is exactly what Noah Kravitz from Phonedog.com tweeted after he was given a tour of the OS at Mobilize last week. I immediately retweeted it myself and so did 37 others. He has also posted a pretty good demo of Windows Phone. Noah is a great guy and I respect his opinions. I have to be honest though, it was great to see him excited about Windows Phone 7.

Check out his video and make sure to show him some love in the comments or over at PhoneDog.

I had a chance to ask Noah a couple questions about his time with Windows Phone 7.

Chris: On the day you made tweeted this, now famous tweet, when did you actually shoot the tweet off? Right after the demo?

Noah Kravitz: Yes, right after.

Chris: What was the #1 thing you liked about Windows Phone 7 from your hands on at Mobilize?

Noah Kravitz: The typography.

Chris: What didn’t you like?

Noah Kravitz: No Mac support.

Chris: If you recall, I spent time with you explaining how cool Zune Pass is a while back. What do you think about being able to sync Zune Pass content with Windows Phone 7 devices?

Noah Kravitz: Subscription music services are more and more becoming a force majeur. Zune Pass has long been near the head of this class. I just wish it worked with macs.

Thanks for the time Noah!

So folks, what do you think of the Windows Phone 7 UI?

It doesn’t, just an observation. I can’t speak for the original commenter though.

Hah… haven’t heard that word in association with Zune in quite some time. :) Love it!

I said it before, I’ll say it again. The Windows Phone 7 UI looks damn good. It’s attractive. The tile system looks compelling. I’m not surprised Noah likes the typography best. That’s an aspect of the look I’ve admired going back to Zune 2.0. I just wish the rest of the world didn’t have to be so stuck in this “us or them” mentality.

      While we know for a lot of people it’s just the dumb-founded conformity factor; for those of us who can do some research and actually pick a phone based on its best needs for us;

you still can’t get over the most important thing to many people on these new phones- Application Support.

It feeds the US or THEM- and to me makes Windows Mobile completely irrelevant.

    “Chris: What didn’t you like?”
    “Noah Kravitz: No Mac support.”

When I stumbled into my kitchen this morning, I sweat I could literally hear coming from from my cabinets my kettle complaining about how black my pots were.

The phone looks awsome, but does it sync up to itunes?
I that alone will have a lot of us switching over to it!

No, it won’t sync with iTunes and it won’t work with a Mac and developers can’t develop for it using a Mac.
I agree that an easy transition from iPhone–> Windows Phone 7 would be nice, but Apple doesn’t let non-Apple devices sync with iTunes. The Palm Pre did sync with iTunes for a little while, but Apple updated iTunes quickly to slap that idea down.

I think the last non Apple product to sync with iTunes was the Motorola iTunes phone…or was it the HP-branded iPod?

BlackBerry Media Sync allows BlackBerrys to sync indirectly with iTunes. It does not use the iTunes application (BMS is standalone, not a plug-in), but it does sync the device with the iTunes library, presumably by reading the xml file. It’s the approach I think Palm should have taken (but didn’t). MS could take a similar approach but don’t count on it.

Right- I don’t see Microsoft touching iTunes, but that doesn’t mean a third-party won’t publish some kind of tool to get it done.

Same thing with doubletwist for Android…it will “mirror” iTunes and sync with an Android phone

It will use Zune software to sync. You should download it, it’s free, it also makes itunes look like a dinosaur as well

+1 I agree, Itunes has gotten better, but Zune is so, so nice. I might be mistaken, but didn’t Apple stop holding your purchased songs hostage with the proprietary encoding that kept you from carrying it to a non Apple player? I think so.

Plus I don’t think there’s a Zune pass app for that yet :-)

MS haters (mostly iOSers – btw, that’s an ‘i’, not an ‘l’) will continue to deride WP7 as if they are somehow personally threatened by potential MS success. Weird, that, since more competition in the marketplace means more innovation and everyone wins. BTW, HTC Sense will be on the HTC phone, but embedded in the tiles rather than as a complete skin. There’s a demo on youtube – looks sweet.

Hi Chris… Tai-Pan from shanzai.com here. I wrote an article “Is the Apple iPhone OS UI looking OLD and outdated?” about that very subject. The iPhone UI despite the numerous iPhone OS updates and changes in hardware hasn’t really changed in 4 long years. When you think how fast the mobile industry is moving, how often Android gets updated or tweaked by the phone brands it does make Apple look a little outdated in my opinion.
