Shearing the Firesheep

Published

on

The snooping extension for Firefox, Firesheep, continues to draw focus and concern. We reported on Fireshepherd, an extension that would allow you to escape those prying eyes earlier and it looks like other solutions are becoming available as well.

One such solution is BlackShepherd. Yes, it is a Firefox extension that detects Firesheep and lets you know there is some snooping going on. You can find BlackShepherd here.

Josh Einstein has also pointed me to a post on LifeHacker that tells us that Microsoft now offers an Always-On Secure HTTPS Connection feature for that email service. Those who see the silver lining in the Firesheep story are saying that hopefully this will lead everyone to eventually switch HTTPS on for safer web browsing for all of us.

Here’s a video of BlackShepherd in action.

Good to see that savvy tech users can detect and protect themselves from this type of breach, but it doesn’t really do anything to help average users. The best solution is to have public wifi providers enable “Client Exclusion” (on Cisco AP’s, but similarly named on others) so that every client on the AP is effectively isolated on the network.
